NCAA Football: SEC Expansion

Looks like Texas A&M will be going to the SEC... what other team will balance the conference?

Most say FSU will stay with the ACC... Clemson is a possibility if they want to be last ever year. They do nothing for the market.

It's all about the TV market. If VA. Tech could be pulled in that opens up some territory.

will be interesting... A&M is gonna have to pull through the first couple of years of bullying but I think they'll fit in just fine in the West.

LSU has good history with them, ought to be an exciting addition.

Not dead.. A&M will leave the Big12 and then apply for SEC membership. If it continued as is the Big12 was going to sue the SEC for trying to steal A&M.

SEC had to come out today saying they will not offer A&M.

BOR Regents meeting at A&M scheduled for 3PM today will give President Loftin authority to withdrawal from Big XII. They will then apply for admission to the SEC which is when the SEC can and will vote. I assure you the fact that A&M's BOR meeting is still happening with the same agenda following yesterday's statements, and the athletic director of A&M flying home from Europe 2 days early (he was there with bball team supposed to be home weds) is no accident.
From a Texas A&M board.

a lawsuit kept them from doing it one way.

reports around here are that they are still jumping ship and applying for SEC Membership, in which they WILL get voted in...

More..

Texas A&M BOR gives unanimous vote... Reply
..of approval to give President Bowen Loftin full authority over conference realignment. Expect a Big XII withdrawal and formal request to the SEC soon. From Liucci on Finebaum today, I'd expect movement by about Wednesday of some sort. With the cancellation of the Committee of Higher Education cancelling their proposed meeting tomorrow there will be no political stop the Texas A&M moving conferences. IF there is anything that would be able to stop it, it would have to happen on the legal front.

It's official..

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/st...new-conference

Texas A&M is done messing with Texas.

Texas A&M has notified the Big 12 that it plans to apply for membership to a new conference, and if accepted, it will end its membership with the Big 12 on June 30, 2012.

The announcement comes after conversations between Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin and SEC commissioner Mike Slive that began on July 21, the day after a meeting of the Texas A&M board of regents.

"I have determined it is in the best interest of Texas A&M to make application to join another athletic conference," Loftin, who was authorized by regents to act on behalf of the university regarding conference affiliation on Aug. 15, wrote in a letter to Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe on Wednesday.

Texas A&M previously asked the Big 12 to provide an outline of requirements to leave the league and the Big 12 responded earlier this week.

"We appreciate the Big 12's willingness to engage in a dialogue to end our relationship through a mutually agreeable settlement," Loftin said in the release. "We, too, desire that this process be as amicable and prompt as possible and result in a resolution of all outstanding issues, including mutual waivers by Texas A&M and the conference on behalf of all the remaining members."

Loftin has stated he has no desire for A&M's "conference exploration" to be "prolonged" but did not offer a timeline for when the Aggies would become members of their new conference.

Texas A&M had been in the Big 12 since its founding in 1996.

They will join the SEC.. It's just a matter of who will the 14th team be. I've heard that the SEC will extend an offer to VT, and if VT doesn't accept within specific time period, then Missouri will be offered. Missouri has said they would accept immediately.

I plan on going to the Auburn/UF game this year unless it's a Noon game.. I also plan on going to UF next year for the Auburn/UF game

I was reading the comments for this article on ESPN and one guy had a link and said the Alabama board's plane is headed towards Virginia ... VT possibly!?

Adding A&M and VT would be fucking awesome. But Someone said VT wouldn't leave the ACC unless it was dissolving.

I think if they can't convince VT to come along (and they won't, not without a ruckus from the Va political machine), I think you have to look at someone from North Carolina. The SEC would love to get UNC & Duke, but that's extremely unlikely.

I think VT will get the first offer as #14.. we'll see if they accept it.

I've read from VT fans that there won't be any political problems from the VA Governor and that UVA would be the first school to let VT out of the ACC. Apparently the last Governor forced UVA to vote VT into the ACC.

We won't get UNC or Duke, and the only school we'd go after is NC State.

There was more than just the Governor pulling those strings, but I don't recall the names and thus can't say if those people still have the power.

Mizzou and NC State really don't do anything for sports, it's all about the cash. I say trade Vanderbilt to the Big East for TCU.

^ Well TCU surely won't happen. And apparently FSU isn't going to go to the SEC. So who would the 14th team be?

I agree VT will be offered but I doubt they will accept it. Mizzou would accept it in a heartbeat if they get offered; other than mediocre football and basketball, I also can't think of anything sports-wise they would offer, except the St. Louis market? Not that big of a market imo. But then again the SEC would need a 14th team and who else would they realistically offer it to?

BTW I just wanted to add, besides A&M's football and obvious fan base and huge media market, we are on par if not better than the SEC school's when it comes to sports other than football (basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, women's soccer, tennis, golf).

All this speculation talk is fun to talk about when it is about your school

Why not? Think they'd rather be in the Big East than the SEC? You'd further lock into the Dallas market. I don't know how long their football run goes, but if you're looking at Mizzou for St. Louis/KC, then I say why not.

They'll sooner add a team to each division than add two to just the west. Why? They don't want to split Auburn and Alabama. And there's no other school geographically that fits into the East.

As for other sports....well, USC is back-to-back national champs. UGA is one of the better tennis programs in the country. Basketball is definitely on the rise. Florida with two titles, the powerhouse that is UK, and UGA, Auburn, Bama and Vandy can all compete.

The SEC won't kick out one of the founding universities (Vandy)...

Why would we want to add TCU a school that has 8000 students compared to Missouri who has 25K+? Adding TCU because of the "Dallas market" doesn't mean a thing when they don't have many alums.

True. Adding A&M is all you need for the Dallas market. The A&M Alum base that actually cares about their football is 100x that of TCU's

That's more of a request.

Well then, OU says it will decide on their Big 12 future.

I think this is the end of the Big 12. A&M goes to the SEC, OU goes to the PAC, Texas follows suit and goes to PAC, Okla St possibly also goes to the PAC because of its ties with OU and if so they add BYU as well to make it an even number. Mizzou might go to the SEC as well IF the SEC's previous 10 invitees don't accept or maybe gets an invite from the Big 10. All the other schools nobody cares about and join the smaller conferences.

This is awesome.

Texas makes its own 'Texas' conference and adds TX Tech, Baylor, SMU, UTEP, Houston, North Texas, TX State, Sam Houston, and since they play each other every year anyways.. its new main rival will be Rice.

Just something I saw on one of my Auburn forums.. thought it was interesting..

SEC West:
Texas A&M (Tennessee, Georgia )
LSU (Alabama, Florida)
Arkansas (Auburn, South Carolina)
Missouri (Vandy, Kentucky)
Ole Miss (Miss St., West Virginia)

SEC Central:
Auburn (Arkansas, Georgia)
Alabama (LSU, USC)
Miss St. (Ole Miss, West Virginia)
Tennessee (Florida, Texas A&M)
Vandy (Kentucky, Missouri)

SEC East:
Florida (Tennessee, LSU)
Georgia (Auburn, Texas A&M)
South Carolina (Alabama, Arkansas)
West Virginia (Ole Miss, Miss St.)
Kentucky (Vandy, Missouri)

Each team plays all four other teams in their division, plus one permanent rival from each division, plus one rotating opponent from each division. So we keep 8 SEC games.

That's a good idea except how do you determine who plays in the title game, best record with tiebreakers?

I think it's inevitable that the SEC schedule goes to 6/2 then 7/2 once we hit 16.

Not so fast my friend. Baylor is threatening legal action, which means the SEC won't officially accept TAMU.

Has to be free and clear of obligations to be formally admitted.

i heard Baylor is pursuing this because the remaining big 12 schools 'promised' not to abandon the conference.

Everyone and their mother knew that the conference was failing, except baylor I guess. Seems like TAMU was the smartest of the bunch to jump the sinking ship

The real reason is Baylor is going to get buttfucked if the Big 12 falls apart. They'll have to go to CUSA or WAC. Mountain West if they're lucky. They aren't a big time school and this is their best shot at being in a big boy conference.
