WINDERMERE, Fla. -- Tiger Woods says he has let his family down and regrets "those transgressions with all of my heart."

In a statement Wednesday on his website, Woods says he has not been "true to my values and the behaviour my family deserves."

He offered his "profound apology" to his supporters.

His comments came after Us Weekly magazine published a cover story alleging that a Los Angeles cocktail waitress had a 31-month affair with the world's No. 1 golfer.

This statement from Tiger Woods was posted on his website:

I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behaviour my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behaviour and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.

Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means. For the last week, my family and I have been hounded to expose intimate details of our personal lives. The stories in particular that physical violence played any role in the car accident were utterly false and malicious. Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.

But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy. I realize there are some who don't share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one's own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions.

Whatever regrets I have about letting my family down have been shared with and felt by us alone. I have given this a lot of reflection and thought and I believe that there is a point at which I must stick to that principle even though it's difficult.

I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology.

Will she stay?

OMFG, i smell one of the worlds largest divorce settlements unless he has a prenup. What a jackass, he's lost much stature in my household. I remember his father saying that he's going to change the world. I wonder if this is how he's going to change it???

celebrities/athletes and affairs happen all the time.

it certainly tarnishes his clean image and brand, but brand name athletes like jordan, kobe, and beckham still thrived.

While many athletes have affairs, this is the most well known athlete on a worldwide level. It will hurt him, but not for long. All is takes is a Major win with a shot of him hugging his wife and all will be forgiven.

Now if she decides to turn this into an ugly divorce his next few season's on the tour may be dreadful.

i'd argue that beckham is a bigger celebrity and more well-known athlete on a worldwide basis. obviously, tiger's more dominant in his sport, but i think beckham's the most well-known athlete.

but i agree with the rest. like beckham's affair, some 5 years ago or so when he was at the peak of his celebrity powers, i think it'll go away.

it's just one of those things us mortals will never understand.

why cheat on your wife when she's already uber-hot? i can understand if the other woman was his wife's twin, and he got them confused.

The hotness of the wife has nothing to do with it.

He has hot bitches throwing themselves at him all day everyday. No man can resist that temptation for long.

How did Tiger and his wife meet? I'm guessing she was one of the hot bitches that threw herself at him and he decided this is the right one to marry. Idiot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elin_woods

Nordegren and her twin sister Josefin had been working as au pairs for Swedish golfer Jesper Parnevik when he introduced her to Woods during the 2001 British Open. In November 2003, Woods and Nordegren attended the Presidents Cup tournament in South Africa and became officially engaged when Woods proposed at the luxury Shamwari Game Reserve. On October 5, 2004, they were married by the 19th hole at the exclusive Sandy Lane resort in Barbados.

On June 18, 2007, Woods announced the birth of their daughter, Sam Alexis Woods, early that morning, just a day after Woods finished second in the 2007 U.S. Open.[2]

On September 2, 2008, Woods announced on his website they were expecting another child in late winter.[3] Five months later, it was announced that Elin had given birth to a boy, named Charlie Axel on February 8, 2009.[4]

Hmmm, I argue against that. I'd think Tiger is bigger in Asia which exposes him to far more people. Lets start another thread to debate this.

Of course Yummy would argue that Toews is bigger than both.

^I agree. I've personally seen >$100 Beckham jerseys in Saigon, Manila, Hanoi, BKK, HK, and Shanghai. Woods is huge and as a fellow Cardinal I give him mad love but Beckham transcends soccer as a CK model, celebrity, and borderline English royalty. I was about 10 feet away from him at the club here before I noticed his entourage of 10 bodyguards, all including Beckham dressed in black. He was wearing a frickin skullcap, mock turtleneck, and black slacks and still stopped traffic. An entire section of the club was roped off for him.

My girl Lea got into an argument with Cobi Jones after he snaked her seat when she went to the bathroom

If you count winning/salary and especially endorsements Wood out earns Beckham 2:1.

Tiger should have held a news conference a day or two after the incident. He would have elicited more sympathy with his face smacked up. All of us guys know what happens when we get in the doghouse. Hell hath no fury...

It's not like he's Ted Haggard or Huckabee holding himself up as a pillar of the community. Just admit, hey ~ I fucked up. Please forgive me while I work it out privately with my wife. The public is very forgiving if you are honest and humble.
