Golf Techniques
Any other golf newbs out there? I just got my first set of clubs, MacGregor Tourney V-Foil woods (1,3,5) and PowerBilt GrandSlam irons, w/ Taylor Made Rossa Monza putter and nice golf bag. I got them all for $280 from a friend who is a dealer. He tells me that all of it would have been about $700 if I bought them retail.
Anyhow, I found this. http://www.easy2.com/golf.asp
It was a great tutorial for me and probably good reminders for beginner golfers. I think I saved a few hundred bucks on golf lessons on just watching this.

golf noob as well, i hated golf for the longest time but since going to the driving rage a few times i started to appreciate it more and now i like it alot. i didn't get a full set of clubs and just bought an iron and a driver to practice my swing. i read some articles on this site that helped me understand the basics. it all comes down to form(as with any sport) and patience.

Practice makes perfect.
I would suggest taking a few private lessons. They will show you the correct form and video tape you at the same time so you can see for yourself what you are doing wrong...

I have a friend who is almost a scratch player. I went with him to the range and worked on my stroke. I can hit straight about 70% of the time and he says I have a pretty good swing. I just need to work a few things here and there. A good golfer friend is sooo much cheaper than some course pro.

Also, like Edr0e said...you just gotta practice and play! You aren't going to magically be awesome at golf. It takes a lot of repetition and knowing how to play the correct shots. Even if you go outside for 10 minutes and work on your swing it will help. Once you can get a good swing down, then repeating it outside for a couple minutes isn't painful
Practice putting inside on the carpet, or even better hardwood floors if you are playing a fast FAST green and chipping on your lawn. I think I read that like 70% of shots are taken from 60-70 yards from the green and closer.
Sorry for the long response, but I hope it helps
The pro lesson will make a world of a difference! ! ! Trust me. You will enjoy your game so much more.
They will show you the correct stances, correct swings, grips, and most importantly correct form. From there u can practice what you have learned and build from that foundation.
Great thing about golf is that anyone can play and have fun. My mother is 51 and she just picked up golf and loves it. I plan to hit the course w/ her sometime soon.
Remember
1. Keep your eye on the ball throughout the swing, almost as if you have an imaginary string connected to your chin and the golf tee.
2. Never lean back always swing and move forward with the stroke.
3. Dont grip the club too tight, relax, dont swing like your trying to clobber a homerun. ( Im 5'9" 150lbs and i can drive the ball outside the range 275yards without even trying to hit the ball hard thanks to taylormade
)
4. Last but not least, alot of golf newbs confuse the golf swing with the baseball swing. Very different swings. A golf swing you point your back elbow towards the floor when you backswing, in baseball you point your rear elbow straight back. Remind yourself, point the elbow towards the floor.
5. You are gonna learn that there is some weight shifting involved while swinging.
The better you can utilize this, the straighter and farther you can hit the ball w/ less wear and tear to your back and shoulders.
6. HAVE FUN. Challenge yourself and others. Nothing better and more relaxing than a day of golf.
