First-place Red Sox set to face Yankees
07/10/2005 10:11 PM ET
By David Selig / MLB.com

Following an All-Star Game featuring their manager and five players, the Red Sox will be quickly reminded that they're in the midst of a pennant race when the Yankees arrive in Boston on Thursday for a four-game series at Fenway Park.
An All-Star hangover could prove costly to the Sox, who lead New York by just 2 1/2 games in the American League East.

"We know they're a good team, we know they have great players, but it's always going to be a great series, so we're not worried too much," All-Star center fielder Johnny Damon said. "It's kind of strange how they set up the series this year. They made it that way so it's going to be great ratings for baseball, so we plan to do very well."

The Red Sox also opened the season in New York and held their home opener eight days later against the Yankees. The season will conclude with a three-game series between the longtime rivals in Boston.

The Sox -- 5-4 against the Yankees this season -- dropped three of four in Baltimore to head into the All-Star Game, allowing the Orioles to creep within two games.

"We knew it was going to be a dogfight with three or four teams, and it's still going to be that way," right fielder Trot Nixon said.

But with Curt Schilling expected return shortly after the break -- if not the first series -- the Sox have additional excitement for the start of the second half.

"We're getting into the stretch run for the playoffs, and it's going to be a nice run to the end," Damon said. "I think we're going to be getting healthier. We're getting Schilling back -- we've been waiting for that all year -- and hopefully we can continue the success that we've had in the first half."

Either way, Francona wants his team to enjoy the rest. He even said he doesn't want players to show up at Fenway on Wednesday to put in any extra work.

"It's optional -- if they show up they're optioned out," he joked.

Pitching matchup
NYY: RHP Mike Mussina
• 9-5, 3.97 ERA in 2005
• 0-2, 7.07 ERA vs. BOS in 2005

BOS: RHP Bronson Arroyo
• 7-5, 4.02 ERA in 2005
• 0-0, 7.94 ERA vs. NYY in 2005

Player to watch
Damon carries a 25-game hitting streak into the second half. In that stretch he has hit .351 and scored 23 runs.

Quotable
"Nothing winds down in this game. You go 1,000 miles an hour, and then you go home. You don't like go 90, 80, 70, 60 [mph]." --Francona, on whether his team slowed entering the All-Star break.

It's gonna be boring since both of their pitching staffs at the moment are crap. But no matter what it will be a stressful series ...

It will come down to either one of them. Unfortunately one of them will be sitting home this October. The Orioles already choked so they don't even count

What happened to all those obnoxious Yankees fans that hang out around here? They seem to be very quiet this year for some reason...

This series DOES matter for both teams. 4 games, Yanks are 2.5 out. If the yanks sweep or take 3 out of 4 they are in 1st. If either gets the loosing end it could be very bad.
Baltimore is still in it. They are still a big threat. Since it's in Boston, I'd say we will split it.

would you like to compare players and advantages to each team. ok yankees have a better 3rd basemen, shortstop, 2nd basemen, LF, and RF. the sox have a better CF, 1st basemen, DHand catcher, along with a better bullpen.
