Imagine if Germany's defence played like this in a game versus a high powered offense...the result would have been very different. But I guess its a good wake-up call for them.

Sorry...the Swiss(me) aren't very fond of the country to the North, so they'd like to see them lose.

You mean the three shots they had and an offside goal?

I wouldn't blame the whole defense for the first goal. Friedrich messed up big time when he didn't move up like the rest of the back 4. Second time around it was offside, so you can't blame the defense. besides that, Costa Rica didn't really have any other chances to score.

Also, scoring two goals from a few shots is quite an accomplishment that even a "high powered offense" would be proud of. Honestly, I can't recall seeing Lehman saving any shots.

In 2002, Brazil beat CR 5-2. CR also tied Turkey (which finished third.) and beat China 2-0, so they're not a nobody. I wouldn't rank them much lower than the Swiss team.

If a player is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent. The position of any part of the player's head, body or feet will be the deciding factor and not the player's arms.

The German's are concerned about the defense,

"Knaller-Sieg! Aber die Abwehr macht uns Sorgen"
Well I think the Swiss are going to be very underrated in this tournament. They have the second youngest team in the tourney, have some goal scorers and play a very good team defense. It'll be interesting to see.

I wouldn't say game over but this game is obviously all England. They were sitting back towards the end of the first half. Stupid mistake by Cole in the corner almost led to a goal. Overall nothing too exciting.

Nothing too exciting, but England know they have to keep fit for a number of additional matches. Wise of them to not go all out in this first offering. I agree that Cole nearly killed us. Looks like England is truly ready to contend for the title.

I think they are trying to get it in to Crouch too much making it predictable. He's not doing much today, so why not go on the pitch to Owen and see what happens. Its gonna be interesting to see Rooney and Owen work together again.

Yeah. They're making too much effort to hit the big man. Not that he hasn't been worthy of the attempts, but I agree that they're forcing the matter. Owen is also quite capable.

England 1-0 Paraguay

That's a decent start. 5 days of rest to prepare for Trinidad.

Oh I know that the German defense is their weak point, but I think they did a great job for the most part. I think you're underrating Costa Rica. Sweden is having a really hard time against T&T, and Costa Rica beat and tied T&T. They sure are having a lot more posessision/chances against Sweden than CR did against Germany.

And I think the the Swiss are underrated too and will be one of the dark horses. Magning used to play for my favorite team (Werder Bremen)

Damn, I feel sorry for that John guy. He got the ball first and then the player. You can give the foul, but it shouldn't be a red card.

This is why I love Soccer/the World Cup. Even though the score is 0-0, T&T are heavy underdogs and are playing with 1 guy less, they almost scored the goal.

sweden should have won with the amount of chances they had, but i enjoyed watching the game end up being a tie... that goalkeeper for T&T did really good

Their HD sucks. The broadcast here in Canada is far superior.

British feed + 5.1 surround sound > lame ABC graphic, 5 seconds delay and their stupid play-by-play commentators.

this argentina ivory coast game is pretty exciting too, fast paced. im interested to see how riquelme and crespo work together rest of the tourney, they seem like a deadly duo

They did all they could , Ecuador was just superior at every level . England was not playing it safe , they just didnt have anything else to offer . Playing defense with just one goal ahead is pitiful . England is not even close to have a chance at the title.

I think they have a pretty good chance at the title. Their defense is above average, they can do a very good job of controlling the midfield, and they'll have Rooney and Owen to work with up front. With that said, I still see Brasil winning the tournament.

Politics aside, I'm routing for Iran because I have a few friends from there. I also like some of the players that play in Germany (Mahdavikia, Karimi, Hashemian)

My prediction - 2-1 for Iran.

Btw, I find it hilarious how the Mexican people think that there will be a routing of Iran. Iran has had some really impressive games before the world cup (2-2 in Croatia, 5-2 against Bosnia)
