BEIJING -- Honda Motor Co. will import Acura TL sedans assembled in Marysville, Ohio, to China beginning next summer, the company says.
The company said in July that it would begin importing the Acura RL sedan made in Japan in spring 2006.
Honda aims to sell 3,000 total Acura imports in China next year. By 2009, it hopes to sell up to 15,000 units a year, says Masaya Nagai, spokesman for Honda Motor (China) Investment Co.
The less-expensive TL should sell more units than the RL in China, he says. Honda hasn't determined the price for either model yet, Nagai says.
The TL should do well if priced around 400,000 yuan, or about $49,900 at current exchange rates, says Yale Zhang, head of emerging markets vehicle forecasts for CSM Asia in Shanghai.
It will compete against the domestically assembled Toyota Crown and imported Nissan Fuga sedans. The Buick Royaum, assembled at Shanghai GM, also falls in that price range.
But the segment should be large enough to generate a fair sales volume, "plus the Acura is quite famous in China," Zhang says.

Apparently. When I was there last month, I grabbed a couple local car magazines and they seemed to speak pretty highly of the Acura brand. This is an interesting move though since the TL is nowhere near the size of the Crown or the Fuga. And at $49,900, it's priced way more than it should be.
Will be interesting to see TLs driving around though when I am back there for the 2008 Olympics.
