I saw your thread and I thought oh nice some updates, and then came in and saw this. So sorry to see this! That is a huge disappointment. I hope everything can be fixed back to normal without any hassles.

If there's any kind of damage underneath the exterior, they'll had to remove the entire top and its mechanism to get it fixed. The trunk decklid will have to be replaced and refinished (obviously), as well as the bumper cover. Plus, the decklid pushed up into the edges of the rear quarter panels at impact. No damage to the metal, but the paint is damaged. Lots of hours in this one.
On a related note, are your taillights damaged or can they potentially be damaged? I mean since the bodyshop would need to replace the tails anyways, might as well get the LCI ones?

Dude - total suckage. So sorry you have to deal with this PITA situation. Glad you're ok. Hope the repair process goes smoothly. It's Arizona, so I have to ask, did the other driver have insurance?

Yes, he had insurance. We submitted a claim via telephone from the parking lot. However, his is bottom-of-the-barrel insurance (ACCC), so I'm thinking I may submit a claim to my own insurance (State Farm) and let them subrogate against his insurance. I don't want to get treated poorly by his insurance company because I'm not their insured.

Thanks.

Now, ask me if I'm constantly thinking that everyone around me on the road thinks I'm a complete loser for driving around with the back end of my car smashed up...

That shit totally sucks. Hopefully it gets fixed up soon. I think most of us have been there in some shape or form.

Don't feel bad, yours is still a BMW.... a slow one but a BMW nevertheless. Just don't try to cover things up with foil, then you are good.

We have all seen people drive around with black trash bag covering their window or taillight that is covered by faded red tape. I have seen someone made an entire front fender out of foil for his Audi A6 (at Walmart)

Looks like ~$5k and 2+ weeks. I'm not taking it in until the 23rd of this month, though. The annual Alpine Devil's Highway run I do each year with the BMWCCA is on the 19th-21st of this month and they couldn't guarantee it would be finished by then, so I'm waiting until after the trip. It'll look a little ghetto for a few weeks, but it's better than missing this trip.

Hope everything is manageable. Cuz, that's life in a nutshell: going through the paces needed to take on each hurdle/pothole. I'm sure this trip will be awesome...bum rear or not.

Hey .. I would look at the positive side of things with this incident.
Hole in rear bumper = less drag coefficient.
Hope all is well T! Hope your back / neck isn't hurting too bad ...

Just make sure they only take pictures from the front.

Uhhhh, estimate to repair just jumped from ~$5k, to just North of $10k. I'm not sure there's any way I get out of this without the insurance company declaring the car a total loss. I'm really not happy.
