I too, have tried to avoid the dreaded argument ridden breaker - wife test by tempting fate only to be shocked by the line, by the fixture after I energized it and neutral was now hot, and then by the stupid bare wire exposed under the twist wire nuts where the bare was left too long. I know your pain.
