Ferrari boss admits strategy error

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/fe...091322133.html

Kinda a shame the last three GP races have been lost to bad team strategy not related to the drivers

Yep, they threw the race away on lap 10. Shame too after that blistering start by Seb. But it was just way too early to pit.

I actually loved the mini battle at the end w/Nico & Max. I was stoked for Nico storming back up the field to salvage whatever points he could muster but Max defended perfectly and Nico just went a bit too deep. Glad he didn't lose any positions though because I think it's better for the championship in general to not have a runaway winner. Onto Baku! (Not!! Im DVRing that shiz b/c of some other race that just happens to be the best race on Earth will be finishing at the same time) #Shame

Ferrari's tire strategy has been pretty bad this year, and it probably cost Vettel the win at Montreal. I expected the Mercedes to be much stronger, so the race was a hopefully a good indication that Ferrari is getting closer so we have more competitive races.

Oh I agree. The new turbo they added gave them some serious torque, especially out of the corners which made them blistering quick this weekend. All good things.

Vettel and Hamilton were on a different level performance-wise vs. the rest of the field. Coming in to Turn 10 full throttle you could visibly see those 2 going faster than anyone else out there it seemed. The gap back to the Red Bulls/Kimi/Nico was large and growing as the race went on substantially.

VETTEL: A COUPLE OF SEAGULLS WANTED TO COMMIT SUICIDE

13 June, 2016

1090

Sebastian Vettel offered one of Formula One’s more exotic excuses on Sunday by saying he had lost time in the Canadian Grand Prix by saving two seagulls from being flattened by his Ferrari.

“I think it was a couple that wanted to commit suicide,” the German said with a smile after finishing second to Mercedes’ world champion Lewis Hamilton at a chilly Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

“They were at the apex of turn one. Lewis obviously didn’t care so he made up quite a bit of time, about half a second, but I didn’t do that couple that favour to say goodbye for good,” the four times Formula One world champion told reporters.

“By the time Lewis came around, they just flew off. Wasn’t fair. I brake for animals, Lewis doesn’t …”

The German, who had led the race until his first pitstop, continued the theme afterwards with some relish — hijacking Hamilton’s interview with Britain’s Sky Sports television for some more good-natured banter about birds.

“I feel that you’re using the seagulls. I feel that they were innocent,” said an amused Hamilton. “I saw you lock up and then the seagulls did move.”

Getting more into the spirit, he added: “Hey man, it was planned. You know I’m good with animals, right? Like Doctor Dolittle, I told them to be there and they were there.”

Vettel insisted he had a case, even if he then undermined it by stating: “I’m a racing driver, so I have to find some sort of excuse for why the hell you beat me today.

“I went into turn one and I saw this stupid couple of seagulls standing there, all relaxed,” continued the German. “My car’s red. It’s easy to see, it doesn’t blend in like yours. That’s what really annoyed me. There’s a red car coming and they stayed there.”

The last word went to Hamilton, who celebrated the 45th win of his career and fifth in Canada, “I think I might have to buy you a couple of seagulls. I think you need a couple.”

I really love Vettels answers he comes up with sometimes. You can tell he is trying to have fun with them.

Kimi had some good radio talk this weekend too. I am really going to miss his radio antics if he doesn't have a seat next year.

That's great. But now the other team's know Vettel's weakness and will drop bread crumbs on the circuit from behind their cars.

I'd love to see one of the teams show up with some seagull images worked into their livery...

So what do you guys think of the Baku street circuit? Is it going to be good or boring? Too unsafe with the high speed and almost no runoff area?

Boring. Like Monaco.

Good thing there's another race on at that time, and it's always interesting.

This is a guess, but I think Hamilton and Vettel are better at tire management compared to their teammates and others.
Besdies driving to conserve fuel, the drivers also have to look after their tires to prevent going off and graining the tread.
Rosberg seems to have a harder time passing in traffic compared to Hamilton.
It's one area I've heard many times from the commentators how good those two are at watching after their tires.
Also the MBZ car while clearly the best car in the field in clear air at the front, it's not as good in dirty air which seems to show a bigger differential compared to other cars in the field.

That's a good observation. Rosberg had a really difficult time passing other cars. I would have thought that with the long straights at Montreal plus DRS would have made it easy for Mercedes to pass any other cars, but that didn't prove to be the case with Rosberg.

I don't know bro, they're saying it should be the fastest street circuit ever with several passing opportunities (and crushing ones too like that one tight turn they've shown a gazillion pics of w/that cool tower thing at the corner.)

Having said that, I agree with you wholeheartedly about the 'other race' which I will indeed be watching & be DVRíng the Baku GP. It's also Pops Day so I'm sure I'll be hanging with my daughters and will watch Baku later on that day....

LM24 or bust!

Very true guys, we've also seen Lewis have issues as well with that several times (and has said it on the radio too). Amazing how much these modern cars disrupt the air so much that it makes such a difference. Fascinating stuff...

I believe the AVUS street circuit is the fastest ever. High banks and long straights. Even back in the thirties, they reached 237mph on the straights.

Lewis taking back the WC feels like a done deal. I know it's not, but it sure feels that way.

this race is going to be a crash-fest. I cannot believe how narrow the track is in spots.
