A guy I work with came pretty close to buying a 5.5 gen Max a few years ago. I told him to do it and that he could make it a pretty fast car for not much money and that the "sleeper" appeal would be loads of fun. Deal fell through though.
Just "completing" the whole NA package minus internals along with further weight reduction and some underbody aero work on the cheap. Main power components to finish things up are V-manage to control CVTC, cams, some custom IM and intake work, plus valvesprings, oil pump, and rod bolts to support the RPM requirements. The cams I went with are very mild compared to what I could have gone with (~20whp gains), but this is my daily driver and I didn't want to hurt gas mileage and low RPM driveability too much. It's also nice to be able to retard the intake cam at idle and eliminate any lope if I want to keep the cams on the DL for fun which i couldn't do with a high overlap cam choice. Won't be doing any head work either, both due to the prohibitive cost of having it done and due to the large power band changes that occur (big bump to the right).

Sorry for the hijack, sonnick

You'll get there. 110+ traps are seriously fast for a daily driver. And I was just thinking about the effects that vehicle height and underbody work have on a car's acceleration. I don't think many people consider this, just like many don't consider improving traction. I wouldn't be surprised if just lowering a TL or Maxima an inch and a half and smoothing out underbody airflow added ~1 mph to the car's trap.

We've had at least 1 example on the maxima forums of making a rear diffuser out of blue masking tape and gaining a little over 2mph trap speed in the 1/4 on the same track with similar DA conditions. A lot of air gets trapped in the rear bumper, apparently. Guess some of those honda guys with holes cut in their rear bumpers aren't as dumb as they look. I also currently don't have any of the engine bay splash shields installed which has probably slowed me down as well.

I wouldn't lower my car much more than it is to preserve axles, though. I'm probably already close to snapping one as is by launching at near redline with a ceramic puck clutch without adding additional strain from lowering it more.

I think I saw that maxima on the forums. Was that the guy with the gutted interior and other weight reduction who went like 107 or 108 mph with light bolt ons?

Yeah. In a 6th gen that's gutted among other serious weight reduction with just intake/exhaust/DRs, ran a 12.9@106.9. I'll never be removing all of the safety equipment and stock sound deadening out of my car like he has, though.

Yeah, that's getting a little carried away. I'd rather spend the money to add power to get the same acceleration effect. Of course, the lighter car will always handle and brake better, but if I wanted a car to do all that really well I'd buy a car designed to do it from the factory.

Well there does come a point on a NA car where making more power becomes extremely expensive and weight reduction becomes the best option to go faster. However, I don't see the point of trying to extract every .001 you can out of a daily driver 4 door family car past a certain point when you begin making the car unsafe and uncomfortable. Some will stop at nothing to hold a "record", though.

As I'm someone looking to purchase a used second car, Slow03 makes the idea of reacquiring a 5.5G Maxima very tempting.

JayPee on the maxima forums has similar mods to myself (just boltons and tune) and has already run 12.51@109.6 before he installed cams. Pretty great imo for a 4 door family car!
