NYC members chime in regarding legality of tint(s)
Hey guys, I've had my 08 for less than a year now and im tired of driving in a fish bowl. I need and want a tint(s). The NYPD is a strange bunch and typically love giving out tickets for tint(s) when the end of the month rolls around. Case and point my brother has a 2006 Accord with all 4 windows tinted and they are extrmely light and he gets tickets for each window almost once every 2/3 months- WTF!.
I found this useful link here : http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/NY/
I aso have extreme sensitivity to light.I was wondering if I get a medical note from my doctor will I be able to work around the 70% limit. Any ideas?

Let me put things in perspective, New York State is $$BILLIONS in the RED financially, cops are looking to raise revenue & window tints is an easy violation. When I go to NYC I do not drive because I know there are NYPD officers literally hiding on street corners waiting to nail NJ & other out of state drivers. In fact I don't even jaywalk or spit on the sidewalk in NYC. When I drive up the NYS thruway I do 65 Mph. Other then tolls I won't give NY state an opportunity to get more $$ out of me. DON'T put tints on your car, not unless you want to make constant donation $$$$.

NJ is a no tint up front state as well. What I did was put 50% on the 2 front windows for UV blocking and 15% elsewhere. I think as long as the tint isn't obvious (on mine, you can clearly see the difference between the front and back windows), so I've never been pulled over in the 3-4 years my TL has had window tint. It's not to everyone's taste, but tint wise, it's not as obvious.

So many variables. Where you are. Who the cop is. Mood said cop is in. Other illegal things you may be doing. Driving style. LUCK.
There is no clearly defined answer for this. Just because someone replies and says they never got a ticket doesn't mean you wont, or just because someone else says they got tickets doesn't mean you will.
Tint your windows and understand the risk your taking, or dont do it.

I have a few MDs in the fam and unfortunately the way that the excuse by medical necessity works is after you've been diagnosed you have to submit a request to the DMV with the medical evidence and DMV decides whether or not to give you a exemption. So even if you have a doctor in your pocket, you might not necessarily get the exemption. Also if you have light sensativity you would know, people that do have it are practically albinos.

they write em in staten island too.....tints used to be cool its just not worth having the "oh shit is this cop gonna pull me over for tints" feeling everytime your on the road.

Best to fight by taking pics of the car without tints in front windows & get a blank receipt from a shop. Make multiple copies of the receipt so you can fill it out with any info needed in case of future tickets. You have to in person to see a judge & present pics & receipt for tint removal. Had to be within 1 business day though. You can mail in with copies to buy time before having the opportunity to see a judge. That's what I did. When you mail it, it'll be returned saying that type of ticket can't be dismissed by mail. Must appear personally.

I have had my tints for 6 years... And only got ticketed one time only... So what I usually do is now take pictures of cops using there cell phone while on duty , driving there personal vehicle with tints, and also when they park there personal vehicles on handicap spots... So that way when I go to court I show it to the judge and they have nothing to say... Lol
as a citizen who pays taxes I think we should also make complaints as well as Lon as you have pictures to proof ...

To the OP, No tints. That's just PC to get pulled over

No tint is legal in the state of NY
If you own an SUV or station wagon you can tint the back windows (a lot come that way from the factory)
The only loophole is if you have a car prior to 1992 the tint laws were different
35% was legal then

I always wonder about the mentality of people who write with the tone that getting pulled over and harassed, even when they are within the law etc., is just a fact of life. Seriously, I think I would thoroughly despise this country if that was my life sorry for you guys.
I never get pulled over, though I constantly speed and drive like an ass. Now that I have dark tints all around (no idea the % because dealer sold it like this) my cop friend had said I'm going to get pulled over all the time... never happened. I've driven around NY and Jersey couple times now... thank goodness nothing

I just got 35% all around. I think once one doesnt go to dark and knows their driving areas and usual locations/patterns of the cops in that area you will be ok. But you will get hit with those tickets from time to time.

I got pulled over a few days ago in Queens. MY front tint was rated at 13% with their meter and my back window was 4%. He gave me a break and only gave me a ticket for front windows and told me listen take this tint off and fight it you will probably win, but just make sure you take them off. I did take them off and took pics. I'm doing a 50% tint now in front and rear this weekend. btw its $90 each window so $360 ticket once or twice maybe 3 times a year is not worth it.

I live in NJ but kept my CT plates. Why? Best tint laws in the region. They allow 35% on the fronts. I have 30% so it is obvious it is not 20% or 5%. If a cop sees you drive stupid you WILL get slapped with a ticket, no mercy. But I generally drive low and slow and I have a Valentine One so everytime I get pulled over it's only because the car catches attention with the rims, bodykit, etc. I tell them it is 35% and it's legal in CT. 9/10 they let me get away. Only a NY trooper put a meter on it and it read 26%. I explained that was because of the combo with factory tint. He let me go.
But the Pallisades Pkwy in NJ always hassle me everytime for this and write the tickets. ALWAYS. Never have a problem with NYPD, LI or NJ cops. They are looking out for 20% and lower. I would stick with 35% and higher, it's less likely you will get hassled. 5% is asking for it.

Legal limit in the state of NY is 70%, anything darker can be a summons depending on the cop. Most cops will use there discretion if it's not too dark.

tints
I do this all the time I caught 4 tickets for tints @$90 each. They be looking at me like im crazy in 30 degree weather with my windows down lol. I even had one officer ask me to raise my windows up when they were down. Im going to remove them soon. Not sure if im going fish bowl or a lighter tint

An officer asking you to roll up your window is a first but you dont have to. But you will piss him off and still get the ticket. The difference is you can go to court and tell them your windows were down and you were complying with the law and it should be thrown out. Its just inconvenient. I have 20% on all windows but no windshield. And I budget 54 dollars quarterly to the police depts in jersey.

True indeed. But *knocks on wood* I havent been pulled in NY for tints ever. It seems as if everyone in NY has tints and the cops are cool with it.

Tints in NYC is always going to be risky, but I will say one thing...be respectful and make the cop feel comfortable when he walks up. If you have tints and get pulled over, roll all your windows down, turn the car off, and put your interior lights on.
The cop will feel much safer walking up to the car. The main reason for tints being illegal is because the cop can't see into the car and its dangerous for them if they have to stop the car for anything. The first impression is the most important and it's not going to definitely get you out of the ticket but will help tremendously if that is the only reason they are pulling you over.
