Yea, many countries have this same tradition, but not European countries. At least Germany has no such tradition... I am Central Asian.

Then it must be Germany alone because everybody I know from Europe embraces that ideal.

I half Croatian and everybody I can think of extends that courtesy.

Probably more common in Europe then the US...based on my cultural observations.
