Move to Mass

My wife and I are looking to move to Mass in the next year. Any tips on where to live? We want to live in a smaller suburb of Boston. Gotta have good schools for the kids. My wife moved to Phoenix from Waltham 20 years ago. Thanks

Waltham, Arlington, Winchester, Lexington, they're all good cities; a little too far from Boston for me personally.
I live in Somerville and love it. But anyway, Medford would be my first choice. Good school system, close to Boston/Cambridge/Somerville, very convenience, and have a lot of activities.

Being from NH and living in Methuen now, I consider Medford to be kinda.... sketch. At least in some areas. Doesn't seem like the safest, nicest place.

Live farther north of the city! It's worth it!!

I'd personally go a little further out to Westboro, Shrewsbury area (I'm a bit biased)

Shrewsbury and Westboro have had the top public schools in the state the last few years, and are both right on the commuter into Boston. Westboro's taxes are about 1/3 higher then Shrewsbury which is why we ended up here.

Poverty everywhere, crappy neighbors who park in their yards, Every other house is foreclosed, 115 degrees today, 70 degrees in the dead of winter, annoying politician and political whining about immigration and illegals and cost of living is high with no excess compensation in pay, crappy school systems ect ect. Anywhere will be better than here.

I'm really looking forward to a change, We have some friends out there that is going to help me find a job before I get out there.

Good luck with your move. Just like any other place I've lived, the Boston area has its pluses and minuses. It is an expensive place to live, the drivers are annoying, and local politics are completely dominated by Democrats .

Suburbs within 95 like Lexington, Belmont, and Newton are very expensive. Arlington and Watertown are nice, and probably a little more affordable. Waltham is hit or miss depending on the neighborhood. I don't know much about burbs outside of 95. I like the north shore (Newburyport, Rockport, ...), but it is too far from the city.

90% of what you said is not MA. The public schools are a lot better compared to where I grew up in the Midwest. The workforce is generally well educated. None of my neighbors park in their yard, except maybe in the winter. Street parking is not allowed overnight from November to April in some towns.

I like the weather. It isn't too hot in the summer. Winters can be tough, but we get plenty of sunny days.

There is a lot to do in the Boston area. Enjoy.

I see what your saying....Def leave Arizona if that is the case, but like you said anywhere but there so be sure to look at other areas as well before making Mass your final destination!!

here in Boston area, depending where you live you will deal with crappy neighborhoods, weather not hot like there but the winters here can be real brutal, long and depressing (we did have a nice winter last year though which was nice for a change).....cost of living here is no better very high as well...Politics here is crap but then again which politics or anything Govt related isn't...they all are shit......the School system here is top notch that I can say is much better then the South or out there....and If you got something lined up jobwise and it pays very well then yes you will be ok I guess coming out here and as stated there is plenty to do as long as spending money is no object!! Night life in Boston can be pretty wild and crazy if thats your thing........

Good luck with your decision and hopefully everything works out for the best.

Strongly agree. The road in front of my apartment is a joke. Nice to know my yearly vehicle excise tax is being put to good use .

I live in Waltham myself, but would recommend Burlington for its convenience to highways, great public school system, and overall convenience in terms of malls/grocery stores, etc. Woburn is also good for convenience, although I havent heard much of their school system.

Ive lived in Waltham all my life, so I am used to the area, and live in the good part of town. Like another member said, its hit or miss depending on the neighborhood. Although, I dont think that it is "dangerous" in any way.

I live in Jamaica Plain, and although it's not the safest, I love it. I personally feel safe here because I've been living here all of my life... but when my girlfriend comes over, she's scared to even stand outside.

I would recommend Brookline or Cambridge. Although they aren't suburbs, they're in a very convenient location and rather safe. Medford is definitely sketchy in most parts. Revere is pretty cool, too. I know Newton can be pretty expensive, but they have great schools, and beautiful houses + great location.

All of the locations I've mentioned are pretty close to the city. I'm not really a suburbs guy.

I was out in AZ for about 5 months and loved it, why would you want to leave that place. I was in the Chandler area. I have family there as well so I do get out there from time to time. I am trying to get out there full time but I need to stay with my house a bit longer that is the only reason I am still in this dump of a state.

Chandler has some nice areas for sure but the whole city is going down the tube. Im a native to AZ so I'm are ready for a change. My wife was born in Waltham and lived in Bilirica for a while. Her grandmother still lives in Boston somewhere but I don't know where.

^Supposedly they just passed a law in MA for that as well. Get caught street racing, to the crusher!!!!!!!

I don't street race anyway, so it doesn't phase me.

I'm not sure what your price range is, but if you want a suburb not too far from Boston...but far enough with good school systems, I'd reccommend Newton, Weston, Wellesley, Brookline, Sudbury, Burlington, Needham, Lexington. Just my two cents.

Yea I echo the same as above - Newton is awesome (if you can afford it).

A lot depends on where you are going to work, depending on where you are at you could have a 20min drive to work or a 1 1/2 hr drive.

What kind of work do you do?
