Reverse the grid says Patrick Head

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/moto...ne/7282861.stm

A radical idea to improve the spectacle of Formula One and make overtaking easier has been proposed by Williams team co-owner Patrick Head.

The veteran says races can be boring and wants the fastest cars to start at the back and the slowest at the front.

"I would like to see the grids in reverse order of championship position," Head told BBC Sport.

"It's the same for everybody, and over a whole season the right guy would still win the championship."

Head, who has been involved in F1 for more than 30 years and is one of the most respected engineers in the sport, feels his idea will "very much upset the purists".

But he said current proposals to facilitate overtaking and improve the spectacle were unlikely to work and urged the FIA, the sport's governing body, to "be a bit more adventurous".
I would like to see this tried for at least once, but it opens the door for teams throwing qualification to get in the front. One can also imagine the 1st corner calamity with the slower cars in front.

Run the race in 2 halves w/ second race starting in reverse finishing order. Figure out a way to reward points so drivers are not tempted to sandbag 1st race and thus start higher up the grid 2nd race. I doubt this would work in Monaco though.

Another choice would be what's commonly done at U.S. short track ovals. They have a drawing that determines the first X number of cars that are inverted at the front of the grid. Have the possibilities be something like zero to eight and I think it could make for some interesting races.

I hate the idea of the "shite" drivers blocking up the good ones, causing accidents and what not. Would make the field much smaller after the first turn.

There is on problem with that idea.

For example, the Ferrari cars might be a bit faster than the Mclarens,..but because of reverse start order,.......despite the quicker pace of the Ferrari cars,........the Mclarens would be fast enough to stay in front and slow the Ferraris down. Thus, the slightly faster cars wouldnt be able to get around. Unless they did it in the pits. I cant really go for that idea. If the Ferrari's have better quali times,......in my example,.....they should be at the front. I think it is outrageous that they might NOT win the race,....because of reversing the order,....and not being able to pass slightly slower cars. It's possible at the Sharp end of hte pack.

Hope that made sense

Easy fix. The top cars simply crawl around the qualifying session trying to be slowest. Once they get a good starting position, then they just fly away in the actual race.

Only someone who's head is so screwed like Mr. Head can think of this stupid idea.

Exactly. Qualifying would be pointless.

After qualifying, why not flip a coin? Heads they invert the order. Tails they don't.
