The request from Scuderia Toro Rosso to be renamed Scuderia Alpha Tauri from next season has been approved, Motorsport.com has learned.

Red Bull’s junior team has been on the grid since 2006, when the energy drinks company purchased backmarker Minardi so it had somewhere to place its best junior drivers

Last month it emerged that Red Bull wanted to rebrand the team, which has raced under its current name – an Italian translation of Red Bull – for 15 seasons

Motorsport.com has learned that an F1 Commission e-vote took place in the week after the Russian Grand Prix and the name change was approved

F1 had already given its blessing to the change, which means that the team will be named after Red Bull’s emerging fashion brand from next season.

Alpha Tauri, launched two years ago, is named after a star in the Taurus constellation.

While teams tweak their official entry names on a regular basis to denote title sponsors, it is not common for names to be changed completely without a change of ownership.

However, Sauber was rebranded Alfa Romeo Racing for 2019, in deference to the Italian manufacturer taking its title sponsorship to an unusual level, even though the Swiss operation is still behind the entry.

Force India’s transformation into Racing Point during 2018 is a different case, because it is officially a different entry.

The Silverstone-based team’s owner fell into administration and was taken over by a consortium led by Lawrence Stroll, which had to enter F1 with the ‘new’ team – even though many major elements, including the cars, were the same as before.

Toro Rosso itself underwent a minor name change before it had even started competing, as the Faenza team was originally going to be called Squadra Toro Rosso.

Red Bull accounts reveal record £304.2m investment into Formula One despite disappoin

https://sports.yahoo.com/red-bull-ac...084700587.html

Red Bull’s flagship Formula One team poured more money into its 2019 campaign than it did in any previous season since it was bought by the energy drinks giant in 2004, according to recently released accounts.

F1 cars are developed the year before they race and the latest accounts for Red Bull Technology show that its costs accelerated by 8.9% to a record £304.2 million in 2018. The company directly owns four-time F1 champions Red Bull Racing and designs, develops and manufactures its cars.

The team hasn’t won the F1 title since 2013 and although its spending has reached an all-time high, its performance on track still hasn’t hit top gear.

Last year it finished third in the standings and it has no chance of winning the 2019 drivers’ or constructors’ championship after Mercedes sewed up both titles at Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix. Valtteri Bottas steered the Silver Arrows to victory in the race whilst reigning champion Lewis Hamilton finished third meaning that they are the only drivers left in contention for the title.

Red Bull’s Alex Albon finished one place behind Hamilton on Sunday but his teammate Max Verstappen retired following a collision with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on the opening lap. Red Bull has only won two races so far this year and both were at Verstappen’s hands. In contrast, it had four victories in 2018 and this also drove up its costs.

The team won one more race in 2018 than the previous year so it had to pay higher performance bonuses to its drivers. However, the bulk of its costs were spent on staff and research and development. Salary payments rose 1.8% to £84.4 million as the team added 16 staff giving a total of 809. Its team boss Christian Horner is understood to be the highest-paid director with a salary of £3.4 million, according to the accounts.

Research and development costs increased by £10.2 million to £118.1 million and this wasn’t just driven by racing. The accounts state that “the principal activity of the group is the design, development and manufacture of Formula One racing cars.” However, they add that the company also “applies high-end engineering know-how outside of Formula One.” This includes collaborating with Aston Martin on a 225 miles per hour hypercar and developing a range of yachts with Sunseeker.

After paying its £304.2 million of costs, Red Bull Technology was left with a pre-tax profit of around £10 million as it had £314 million of revenue. This largely came from prize money, sponsors such as watchmaker TAG Heuer and payments from Red Bull itself.

The energy drinks giant ultimately owns Red Bull Technology and its logos are emblazoned on the F1 cars. It paid the team £104.2 million for this exposure last year, an increase of 10.6% on 2017. It remains to be seen how long this will continue.

F1 is rapidly approaching a crossroads as the teams’ race contracts all expire at the end of next year and the sport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has proposed introducing radical new regulations after that. Major aerodynamic changes are under discussion as well as the re-introduction of mid-race refuelling which hasn’t been allowed since 2009.

The accounts point out that “changes in regulations by the FIA can have a material impact on a team’s competitive capabilities with significant commercial consequences.” Ominously, they add that “the company is mindful that under the new commercial and regulatory framework, post-2020, Formula One needs to remain attractive for Red Bull’s continued support.”

The FIA has committed to finalising the new regulations by the end of this month so it is now in a race against time to get all of the teams across the finish line.

A number of Ferrari's Formula 1 rivals have written to the FIA for clarity over the legality of design aspects they believe are behind the Italian team's engine advantage.

Motorsport.com understands that Ferrari's competitors are seeking clarification over whether they are clear to pursue similar concepts themselves or if the ideas fall foul of the regulations

The requests have come after Ferrari's recent performance breakthrough revealed the full extent of its engine advantage, which is believed to be worth up to 0.8 seconds at some tracks and has been described as 'ludicrous' by one high-level team source.

Since the summer break Ferrari has topped all five qualifying sessions and won three grands prix.

A significant car upgrade in Singapore has helped counter the cornering performance deficit that held it back through much of the season, and turned its speed advantage into a crucial qualifying edge

Ferrari's gains have helped re-establish it ahead of Red Bull and also leapfrog Mercedes in terms of on-track performance.

One theory relates to Ferrari's intercooler and how a controlled leak may allow a small amount of oil to enter the combustion process, and produce a power boost for a short period of time.

Using oil in the intercooler, which Ferrari is thought to be alone in utilising, is permitted by the regulations, although the rules demand that such systems "must not intentionally make use of the latent heat of vaporisation of any fluid with the exception of fuel for the normal purpose of combustion in the engine".

At least one of Ferrari's rivals believes this could be where part of its qualifying advantage comes from and has sought clarification over whether such a practice would be allowed.

Ferrari's energy recovery system has also drawn attention from a different competitor, which has raised its own query with the FIA.

However, Ferrari's rivals say they have not had responses to their attempts to gain clarification.

The FIA's preference is that teams lodge a protest, something FIA president Jean Todt referenced last year when Ferrari was scrutinised by the FIA amid question marks over its ERS and battery usage.

When approached by Motorsport.com over the current concerns from Ferrari's rivals, the FIA said it "continues to monitor all parameters relating to conformity of power units in the FIA Formula One World Championship to the technical regulations".

It also stated it has "received no protest from any competitor regarding any current designs".

The lack of a response from the FIA to specific correspondence has left Ferrari's rivals uncertain about how to proceed.

Part of the worry is also whether this is among the fall-out from Charlie Whiting's shock death on the eve of the season and the redistribution of his wide-ranging responsibilities.

When Whiting held his position as race director, formal and informal queries were a common way of clarifying the governing body's position on potential grey areas.

This allowed concerns to be discussed openly and settled without the need for protesting, which could lead to teams targeting one another and create greater conflict.

The process also fostered trust that the FIA was on top of sensitive technical matters, rather than relying on teams to formally table concerns before the governing body intervened.

Ferrari's performance gains have not been enough to disrupt Mercedes' domination of the V6 turbo-hybrid engine era, as Mercedes wrapped up a sixth consecutive constructors' title in Japan, but it has become the benchmark in outright engine performance.

In Russia, Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto said its engine advantage is "not as big" as some people think.

The scrutiny over Ferrari's progress started in earnest last year with an investigation into its ERS that ended with the FIA insisting it was "satisfied".

However, even then, elements of how the FIA handled that process led to concerns.

Mercedes staff members Lorenzo Sassi and James Allison were publicly named by the FIA as responsible for raising the initial ERS concerns – a disclosure Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff called "disturbing".

An official protest against elements of Ferrari's current design appears unlikely.

It would have to be made during a grand prix weekend and would likely be against the alleged non-compliance of a car within the regulations.

That is generally required no later than thirty minutes after the publication of the provisional classification.

Racing Point submitted a twelve-page file to the FIA after the Japanese Grand Prix stating that they thought Renault were cheating. It is thought that the French team are using a system that automatically adjusts the brake balance. If this is the case then former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher believes that the team will be in big trouble

"It is, after all, an unwritten rule that you only come up with such allegations if you are 100% sure," Schumacher said to Sky Germany. “If this is the case, then that is, of course, a complete disaster for Renault. They would fall for the second time.

“The first time was in Singapore when Ricciardo was caught with the energy recovery system that would provide too much power. If this is proven, then that is clearly cheating."

Schumacher believes that the drivers must also know about the system and that they could also be in trouble.

“This cannot happen without the knowledge of a driver. If as a racer you don't have to adjust your brake balance yourself once, then the penny must fall...

“A driver is responsible for adjusting the brake balance. If this happens automatically, it gives a considerable advantage in turns. You can brake later and through the bend at a higher speed. An automatic system can always do that better than a person

“The most obvious option is a whistleblower," he said. "There are more than 1000 people working for both teams: One of them will probably change jobs one day. Then it is possible that such information will come to light."

That's not a street course, Ross said he'd build the track on land he owns. I'd go, non-stops from Buffalo to Orlando on Southwest would have me there in a little over 2 hours.

My brother lives in South Beach, so perhaps I'd go.
When Red Bull was filming their video series with the Red Bull F1 car driving through various parts of the US it drove in front of my brother's condo building.
He said the V8 noise reverbing off the various building there was pretty cool.

Renault have been disqualified from the results of the Japanese Grand Prix after a protest brought by rivals Racing Point was upheld. It means the French marque lose the nine points they scored in Suzuka, where Daniel Ricciardo finished sixth and Nico Hulkenberg tenth.

Racing Point’s protest regarded an alleged breach of the Sporting and Technical Regulations and the FIA International Sporting Code, relating to a ‘pre-set, automated brake bias system’.

The operation of the system, they claimed, could be seen via onboard camera footage, with the brake balance display on the Renault drivers’ steering wheels changing without driver input.

Renault disputed the claim, and having examined both the FIA standard electronic control units and the steering wheels used by Ricciardo and Hulkenberg - which were sealed and impounded after the race - the FIA stewards determined that the described control system was not pre-set nor lap distance-dependent as alleged.

The stewards also found that while Renault used ‘innovative solutions to exploit certain ambiguities’, the system was not in breach of the F1 Technical Regulations.

However, Renault were found to have breached F1’s Sporting Regulations relating to driver aids. F1 rules state the driver must drive the car alone and unaided, and the stewards found that the system meant the drivers were saved from making a number of adjustments during a lap, even if it wasn’t a substitute for driver skills or reflexes.

The decision, which Renault have the right to appeal, means that Racing Point's Lance Stroll and Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat will now be classified ninth and tenth respectively, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly, and Racing Point's Sergio Perez moving up to sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.

Toro Rosso and Racing Point, meanwhile, move to within striking distance of Renault for P5 in the constructors’ standings with four races to go.

Two points:

Clearly Renault was using this "illegal" system for not just the Japan GP. Does this mean that all the results up to now are potentially eliminated? I guess the Japan GP race stewards could only impact that particular race, so it's up to the FIA to make a ruling? If that's the case, surely Renault must appeal or risk a full season disqualification.

Regardless of who is really in the right, I'm always somewhat annoyed by these ex-employees that leak these information to their new employers.

Renault’s disqualification from the Japanese Grand Prix will stand after the French marque decided against appealing - despite saying they believe the penalty was “inconsistent with previous sanctions for similar breaches”.

Racing Point launched a protest at Suzuka regarding an alleged breach of the Sporting and Technical Regulations and the FIA International Sporting Code, relating to a ‘pre-set, automated brake bias system’ - something Renault disputed.

Following an examination of the evidence, the FIA stewards determined the described control system was not pre-set, nor lap distance-dependent as alleged, but they found Renault did breach the Sporting Regulations regarding driver aids.

As a result, Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg – who finished sixth and 10th respectively at Suzuka - were disqualified. Renault acknowledged the decision and after careful consideration, have decided not to move forward with an appeal.

“We regret the Stewards’ decision and, in particular, the severity of the sanction applied. In our opinion, the penalty is not proportionate to any benefit the drivers derived, especially when used within the context of a system confirmed fully legal and innovative,” they said in a statement.

“It is also inconsistent with previous sanctions for similar breaches, as acknowledged by the Stewards in their decision, but expressed without further argumentation.

“However, since we have no new evidence to bring other than that already produced to demonstrate the legality of our system, we do not wish to invest further time and effort in a sterile debate in front of the International Court of Appeal concerning the subjective appreciation, and therefore sanction, related to an aid that reduces the driver workload without enhancing the performance of the car.

“We have therefore decided not to appeal the Stewards’ decision.

“Formula 1 will always be an arena for the relentless search for the slightest possible opportunities for competitive advantage. It is what we have always done and will continue to do, albeit with stronger internal processes before innovative solutions are brought on track.”

The disqualification has a major impact on the constructors’ championship, with Renault now 43 points behind McLaren in the fight for fourth, with Toro Rosso and Racing Point breathing down their necks sixth and 10 points adrift respectively.

The French marque now faces a huge fight to maintain their position with just four races of the championship to go.

Not that cheating should be allowed at all but I find it somewhat funny at least that even with cheating they can't land a podium.

The FIA is continuing to roll out electronic policing of track limits offences in Formula 1 by making use of a detection system at the exit of Turn 11 at the Mexico City track.

Electronic monitoring was used at Spa’s Raidillon over the Belgian GP weekend, and it proved successful in ensuring that drivers stuck to the circuit

Mexico’s Turn 11 is a fast left at the end of the esses section, leading onto the back straight, just prior to a DRS zone. Drivers running wide there are judged to have gained a potential speed advantage.

The FIA has made it clear that any driver who goes completely off the circuit at that point will lose his laptime, while three such offences in the race will lead to a black and white warning flag

In his pre-event notes, race director Michael Masi wrote: “A lap time achieved during any practice session or the race by a driver completely crossing the red and white kerb on the exit of Turn 11 with no part of the car remaining in contact with the red and white section of the kerb, will be invalidated by the stewards.

“On the third occasion of a driver completely crossing the red and white kerb on the exit of Turn 11 with no part of the car remaining in contact with the red and white section of the kerb during the race, he will be shown a black and white flag, any further cutting will then be reported to the stewards.

“Each time any car completely crosses the red and white kerb on the exit of Turn 11, teams will be informed via the official messaging system.

“The above requirements will not automatically apply to any driver who is judged to have been forced off the track, each such case will be judged individually.”

Masi also reminded drivers of Mexico City track limits ground rules previously established by Charlie Whiting.

He wrote: “Turns 1, 2 and 3: Any driver who either passes to the left of or runs over the fluorescent yellow kerb sections on the left hand side between Turns 1 and 2, or who passes to the left of the bollard on the apex of Turn 2, must re-join the track by driving around the end of the fluorescent yellow kerb sections on the right hand side between Turns 2 and 3.

“Turn 8: Any driver whose car passes completely behind the red and white kerb on the apex of Turn 8 must re-join the track by keeping wholly to the right of the fluorescent yellow kerb parallel to the track on the exit of Turn 8.

“Turn 11 – Apex: Any driver whose car passes completely behind the red and white kerb on the apex of Turn 11 must re-join the track by keeping to the right of the two polystyrene blocks and then wholly to the left of the fluorescent yellow kerb parallel to the track on the exit of the corner.”

He added: “In all cases detailed above, the driver must only re-join the track when it is safe to do so and without gaining a lasting advantage.”

They based the travel cost from the UK. If you based it from the US, the cost would be probably x3!

Pirelli boss Mario Isola has hit out at a new on-screen graphic debuted recently by Formula 1.

The new graphic purports to show in real-time what percentage of tyre wear remains on the individual four corners of the depicted drivers' car.

Isola says it is not credible.

"You cannot know that sort of information during a race from the outside," Isola is quoted by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport in Mexico.

"It depends on too many factors. I was a bit surprised when I saw the graphic at Suzuka so we will have to talk to those in charge again."
I was wondering about this myself. It think they were targeting the video game crowd with these new graphics.

Incredible effort by the 77 crew, which paid off with a podium.

Missed this til I heard him dedicate the race to Bono after the win:

https://www.espn.com/f1/story/_/id/2...-mexico-austin

Lewis Hamilton will be without his long-term race engineer Peter Bonnington as he vies for his sixth world championship in Mexico City on Sunday.

Bonnington will miss both the Mexican and United States Grands Prix to undergo a personal medical procedure in the U.K., meaning there is a high chance he won't be at the track when Hamilton wraps up this year's title.

Hamilton's usual performance engineer, Marcus Dudley, will step up into the role of race engineer in Bonnington's absence, while Dom Riefstahl, who usually runs the team's engineering support room back at Mercedes' factory, will stand in as performance engineer on Hamilton's side of the garage.

Hamilton has worked with Bonnington, known as 'Bono' within the team, since he joined Mercedes in 2013 and the pair have won four world championships together.

Bonnington has been a part of Mercedes since the German manufacturer returned to the sport in 2010 and was also at the team when it won the 2009 title under the Brawn GP name.

Bonnington shares a close bond with Hamilton and is often heard on team radio talking his driver through race strategy and setting changes on the car.

Race engineers also play a large part in determining car setup, which is crucial to performance over a race weekend. Hamilton needs to outscore his teammate Valtteri Bottas by 14 points to secure the championship this weekend - a tough task in normal conditions.

However, it is likely he will secure the title at the following round in Austin, Texas.

Who's the best in-car whiner that's always doubting the team's strategy?
