Wonder how that will affect the attendance at COTA this weekend? As my brother said, whenever a track starts offering tickets for Sunday only at less than $100, there's a big problem with attendance.

No, Hamilton beat Button in 2012, although by just a few points, thanks to too many DNFs.
I was a big skeptic of McLaren signing Perez. If McLaren went by last year's results, they should have signed Maldonado, who at least won a race. I thought Perez would get destroyed by Button this year, but Perez has out driven Button this year, IMO.
McLaren should have tried to sign Raikkonen for next year.

Although never with the same raw speed as Hamilton, Button held his own with him over the years they were teammates. Almost equal 2012, Button 2011, Hamilton 2010. They made good teammates both on and off the track which surprised many. It was also Martin's decision, which Ron did not support but even he admitted it was a good one at the end of 2011.

Um, no. Button couldn't keep up with Hamilton last year. Button has never been super quick, and he needs the stars to line up to get the best results. His results this year have only been marginally better than Perez, and on out right pace, I think Perez is slightly faster. If I'm running McLaren, I'd keep Perez because he gets pretty much the same out of the car as Button and he brings in money. On top of that, Perez has more up side potential as he develops.
Perez has been more inconsistent with lap times which apparently concerned Martin enough to try another driver.
, although he's in his twilight I would still expect Button to challenge them both with a good car. He proved the doubters wrong in 2011, even Briatore admitted he was wrong about Button

I was in Austin last weekend, alot Mobile1 billboards on roads and at the airport.
Funny thing is the Perez were in Spanish wording and Button's in English

I guess great minds think alike.
Just kidding. Wonder how Magnussen will do with McLaren. Don't have a lot of faith in a rookie driver, but Hamilton was a rookie when he almost won WDC.
He's my age, too.

I feel old. It seemed like just yesterday Jan Magnussen was signed by McLaren. Back then, he was hailed as a can't miss talent. That didn't work out too well.

Maldonado accuses Williams of sabotaging his car:
http://msn.foxsports.com/speed/formu...aging-his-car/
A frustrated Pastor Maldonado suggested that Williams had deliberately made his life difficult in qualifying in Austin.
Maldonado qualified 18th, while teammate Valtteri Bottas made Q3 and will start ninth.
Relations between the Venezuelan and his team have become increasingly strained since he made it clear that he was leaving.
After stepping out of his car, Maldonado told TV reporters: “You need to ask them, the guys that are working on the car, it is quite clear.”
Asked why he was slower than Bottas, he said: “I never got 100%. I think in my car somebody is playing with the pressure and the temperatures. But it’s one more race to go so that’s great…”
At a later media session he had only slightly toned down his thoughts, when asked if his car had been deliberately handicapped.
“Maybe, maybe not but I’ve never felt something like that. I know very well how the car is; even from the beginning of the season it was quite tough for us but I’v never felt something like that.
“The car is nowhere, the car is undriveable and it’s very clear on the onboards and the data where and when I’m suffering on the track. The car was turning more to one side than the other.”
Not surprisingly the team has denied the claims and said that Maldonado simply didn’t get the tires into the right operating window.

True but the past is indicative of the failures of F1 races in the US. Whether it be Chris Polk, Tony George,.... they all failed due to the greed of Bernie and the lack of general interest in F1 racing in the states.
And this coming from me, a big F1 fan. It's just the way it is.

I can't even think of the remotest reason why there should be an interest in F1 in the US ?
There is no #1/#2 US driver, no US team, no US engine supplier, no US chassis builder, no nothing. There is simply nothing to connect the US with Formula 1.

devil's advocate here: where's the connection in Canada with the GP? If you say JV and his Dad (past); we had Gurney, Andretti and Hill (past) and both countries nothing since. The Canadian GP is one of the best attended and most liked events of the year by everyone.

^ valid question.
The Canadian's love their open wheel racing whether it be CART (when it was around) or F1. There was 3 CART races per year in Canada at one time, even used the F1 circuit in Montreal. They do not seem to like NASCAR.
The US had a great open wheel series, CART before Tony George became a 1st class A-hole and declared war on it. In the end nether CART or IRL/IndyCar won, it was NASCAR that dramtically increased their market share.
In terms of F1, their is interest but Bernie has made it the norm that tiered licensing fees will occur for rich nations like the US. This makes for expensive seats compared to other races. One exception was the the Indy GP which Tony took losses on. Canada and now Australia have balked at this, Canada stood their ground and won.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_GP#2009_hiatus
The main issues I think with F1 in the states is only a few races and most of the audience don't know the drivers or majority of teams except for Ferrari. That is not a issue with NASCAR which seems to cultivate a driver image pretty well. In IndyCar it's a problem their CEO has identified and is trying to address.

NBC Sports' live broadcast of the United States Grand Prix on Sunday drew 1.01 million viewers, up 47% vs. last year on SPEED (688,000), according to final national data provided by The Nielsen Company. The rating was achieved despite blackouts due to news pre-emptions for severe weather in the Midwest, including the Chicago and Indianapolis markets.
The U.S. Grand Prix from Circuit of The Americas scored a 0.65 household rating, according to final national data, up 67% vs. last year's race on SPEED (0.39). The audience for Sunday's race, in which four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel scored his eighth consecutive victory, also surpassed NBC's coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix (950,000) in June by 6%.
The USGP held its own against the NASCAR Sprint Cup finale and title-decider from Homestead-Miami Speedway. ESPN's live telecast of the Ford EcoBoost 400 earned a 3.1 household rating, averaging 5,118,577 viewers, according to Nielsen Media. The rating and audience for the NASCAR finale were also both up from last year's Homestead race, which earned a 3.0 household rating and averaged 4,769,427 viewers.
F1 audience breakdown:
Among Adults 18-49 (387,000), the U.S. Grand Prix was the second-most watched race of the season on NBC behind the Monaco Grand Prix (441,000). NBC tallied double-digit increases vs. SPEED's telecast last year among Adults 18-49 (+45%) and Adults 25-54 (+39%).
Viewership for the race peaked in the 2:45-3 p.m. ET quarter-hour with 1.233 million viewers. Austin led the nation with a 6.88 rating for the race. Following are the top-5 markets:
Austin – 6.88
Greensboro – 1.90
San Diego – 1.69
Columbus, OH – 1.66
Orlando-Daytona – 1.60
For its three F1 races so far this season, NBC is averaging 1.152 million viewers, up 11% compared to FOX's four-race F1 race average last year (1.038 million). NBC will again broadcast this weekend's season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, after practice airs live on NBCSN and qualifying live on CNBC.

If you go Turn 9 grandstands are the place to be. Sat there this year and we could see from the S's all the way across the track into turn 12. The view was awesome!
