VMWare
Anyone here looking to get in on this? 10% of VMWare is being spun off from EMC as a separate IPO. Exact date hasn't been release yet, but I expect it to be complete with in 2 months.
I guess the best way to have played this would have been to buy some EMC when they first announced that. It's gone from $13 to $19 in about 4 months.
I think VMWare is a terrific product and I will probably end up getting some of that stock sometime after the IPO settles down. Do you guys think that EMC still has some room to go up before the actual IPO or is it played out?

I was looking at EMC at $15 and decided to buy MEMC Electronics (WFR) instead. I wouldn't say it was a mistake, but I'm still waiting for a good entry point into EMC.
The VMWare spin off will be successfully. There's a lot of hype around it and if you're looking to get in then just buy EMC instead.
EMC was just downgraded and they have their earnings call scheduled for next week (Jul 24th). I'm thinking of using the downgrade to buy half my position on a pull back, and then the other half after they report earnings. ...still not sure but I'm kicking myself in the ass for not getting in at 15.

i'm going to be playing EMC in the coming weeks up to the IPO, seeing as they still will own 90% of VMWare, and their valuation should rise based on the valuation of the VMWare spinoff

I bought EMC a couple days ago (pre VM IPO) at 16.xx and then bought some more on the early $18 dip this morning. I put in an order at the beginning of the trading day and what I saw being support (18). I didn't think it would get filled and when it did I got so excited. I thought it was a great move and watched the stock run all the way up to $19 today!! ....and then it nose dived in the afternoon. How disappointing.
We'll see what happens tomorrow. But I'm sticking with EMC. As for VMWare I honestly believe it's overhyped. Right now it'll do well but wait until reality sets in...I think it's going to hit hard. VMWare is NOT Google ...you cannot compare how VMWare makes money to how Google makes money. It doesn't make sense. I think people don't truely know what VMWare does. It creates Virtual machines on one SINGLE machine. That doesn't make them any faster or more efficient ...they're running on ONE machine. Yes it decreases hardware requirements for having multiple machines, but companies cannot go into production with virtual pcs. Virtual PC's are simply used for development purposes. You Tube can't (or at least shouldn't) use VMWare to host multiple servers providing video content.
I don't know ...I'm just lookin to make a few bucks on the hype without the "risk" in the VMW ipo ...so far it seems I would've been better off in VMW.

well the money to be made from the hype was all last month when emc ran up from 13-18, and then the day before when emc jumped 9 percent. sell on the spike the day that vmw went public. market's gonna be rough next 4 weeks so you might take a further hit on emc before it starts headin up more. vmw will run up a lil bit then i expect it to settle back down to around 42-45... but if it hits below 40 then i might pick some up.

EMC has been hanging in there pretty well throughout the recent market downward movement. I don't know how much longer the hype around VMWare will be able to withstand the downward pull of the "credit problems"
