8-10% can be expected out of the S&P500. But that doesn't mean you get 8 every year. Some years you get 15%, some you get 4%, some you get -15%.

As you get older you should move to bonds so another "2001-03" doesn't come up and take away 30% of your stash.

There are also quite a few funds nowadays that have set retirement dates on them and the ratios of stocks/bonds/cash are automatically changed as retirement gets closer to reduce risk. Quite easy for the person that likes to "set it and forget it".
I'm another lucky young one, 26 now but my dad started a Roth IRA for me when I was around 18 or younger and with this I have learned to put in 20% + of my income into retirement savings each year. During the years at home it was more like 60%+ of my income. I am trying to get my girlfriend to start some retirement accounts (she is 23 and she NEEDS to start now).
