Let's talk lay-offs

Any of you guys on your edge of your seats?

Seen a 50% lay-off here in the past month. (Architecture firm). 200 ppl --> ~100. 20 people are booted every Friday

Finance went first, its starting to trickle QUICK. Especially here, in NYC.

I'm in a floor-covering sales business. You'd think we'd be hurting pretty badly, and to some degree we are. Sales are really down and I think we're in the mode of trying to outlive our competitors (who are folding quickly). Our department (IT) is pretty lean, so to cut one position would mean no new IT inititives; all the department's time would be day-to-day support and maintenance.

The company has already cut upper mgmt salaries by an avg of 10% and let the marketing dept wither away. They are considering another round of pay cuts. With almost 50 locations, there's quite a bit that can be cut back before it would threaten me.

Good luck to those closer to the front lines. And to those whose job depends on people on the front lines. It's always saddening to see a company cut its sales staff and then wonder why their revenue is dropping.

Yes I am at the edge of my seats. There probably was about 50 people laid off at my job a few days ago. Then my friend works at enterprise and they also laid off a few people.

I personally don't work during the school year anyway. My dad owns his own company and has had to lay people off. Its really sad because I liked some of the people he had to lay off.

And this thread could clarify to be in the main ramblings forum.

I work for a large construction company, and although we aren't expecting a lot of new jobs the current jobs we have will carry us for at least 2009. The accounting department just hired 2 new people, so I'm safe.

I was working fulltime hours, but I was hired as parttime. I was averaging about 40+ hours a week and now I am reduced to 16! Crazy, luckily I just got a new job.
