Where does it say this rate is guaranteed through the end of 2005? I thought it was a variable rate.

has anybody emailed ING about this? What do they have to say?

I'll be switching soon if they don't make a move.

it is a variable rate but I got an email saying that the 3.25% is guaranteed til december.

I checked my account and its stating that its 3.2% not 3.25% though

ING just upped theirs to 2.6% so i dont think they will be upping it significantly anytime soon

emigrant doesn't have referral bonuses

I sent a quick email to ING.....Here is CSR reply....

"Thanks for the e-mail. We are aware of Emigrant Bank's rates as well as the
rates of all of our competitors. I personally don't expect Emigrant's rate
to stay at 3% very long and feel that it is just a gimmick to attract new
Customers....."

here is wat the email that i got from emigrant said;

WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT AS OF MONDAY, MARCH 14, 2005, YOU WILL EARN 3.25% APY ON YOUR AMERICAN DREAM SAVINGS ACCOUNT WITH EMIGRANTDIRECT.COM AND THAT THIS NEW INCREASED RATE IS GUARANTEED THROUGH DECEMBER 31, 2005.

ya i got the same email from emigrant....well that's a pretty darn good rate

i don't think ING has anything to say about this...if emigrant was still 3%, it's still greater than ing's rate of 2.6%....so since beginning, i've deposited all my savings into emigrant...

Here's the reply I got back from ING.... not very convincing if you ask me

Dear Chris,

ING DIRECT does not base rates on one competitor, we base them on overall
market conditions as well as on our competition.

Even though another bank may currently offer a higher rate, we feel that we
offer the better deal for several key reasons.

ING DIRECT has consistently paid one of the nation?s highest yield with no
fees and no minimums for more than 4 years. We have a low cost business
model that allows us to continue to offer these high rates over the long
term.

ING DIRECT's privacy policy exceeds government standards. We have an opt-in
policy, which means that we do not share private Customer information with
affiliates and other third parties without express permission from our
Customers. Other banks may share this type of Customer information
automatically, unless the Customer tells them not to.

ING DIRECT has Sales Associates who are thoroughly trained on all of ING
DIRECT?s products answering the phone. Our Customers can always speak to
a ?person?. ING DIRECT Sales Associates strive to answer the phone in 20
seconds or less to provide an excellent Customer experience.

If you are simply looking for a higher rate, keep in mind that we also offer
CDs which earn as high as 4.15% APY depending on the term that you select.

If you have any more questions, give us a call 1-800-ING-DIRECT.

Thanks for your interest in ING DIRECT,

Dave
I think I'll be switching soon.

I thought about this more and would it be better to have a truly variable rate or one that is fixed at 3.25% through the end of 2005? What is the expectation for rates in 2005? I'd keep an ING acct open with an Emigrant just to be safe.

It's not fixed, it just won't be lower than 3.25 in 2005.

BTW, I have now had a chance to use ING and Emigrant and Emigrant is just fine, esp for being 0.45% higher than ING. ING has a cleaner set-up, but not enough to sway me from putting my money in Enigrant. Just my 2 cts for anyone curious.
