man, got my bonus yesterday... the government took away almost 50%!!!!!
I was hoping the bonus can help me greatly on the condo downpayment... now it doesn't even make a dent now...

Tax and Death... unavoidable

 

Is that because your bonus pushed you into another tax bracket or are bonuses taxed more heavily than "normal" income?

 

My wife's bonus had about 40% taken out, but it was still enough to buy 3 TSXes

I don't get a bonus. No benefits for temp people... I plan to get another job as soon as I get my work visa.

I get a bonus each quarter. Nothing much mind you, especially after taxes, but an extra 2 weeks pay is better than nothing.

 

Actually, It is not really the govenment taking nearly 50%, it is your employer. Employers typically withold more for bonuses than regular salary because it may put you in a higher taxable bracket. Eventually you will receive the the additional withholding back on your tax returns. I think it is possible to request that your employer to pay your entire bonus without paying taxes on it. But keep in mind, you will have to deal with the tax consequences when you file your return.
