Best Credit Card for a first timer?

Hey guys, I'm about to turn 18 in a few days, and I figure it's time for me to start building up my credit score. So in order to have a credit score, you must have a credit card right?

So I figure I would get a credit card, and just use it to pay my phone bill and gas expenses on, things I know I need to pay anyway.

So yeah... what's a good credit card for a first timer like me? Any help on building credit/ getting a good credit card would be appreciated

Try Citi cards. Some of their student cards offer great awards such as cash back for books and gas (and everything else). Don't forget to pay off in full EVERY billing period.

I would suggest getting put on as an authorized user on per say your parents cards first, that way it will be easier for you. Out of all the cards out there I would go with Amex Blue for students.

First, they are the most generous with credit line increases. They are fairly easy to get. Customer service is better than most companies, rewards programs are better and they offer much more security than the other cards.

The AmexBlue is a pretty cool card to have. However, they charge businesses more to accept them and generally most places dont accept them. Your best bet is to go with Visa/MasterCard. I have a Visa CapitalOne card when I was in college and I still have it today. I dont believe for the things he want to pay, they will accept American Express.

My first card was a student discover card. Got the application/pre approval in the mail at my school po box. Still use the card after 7 years. Amex Blue is good, I've had one now for 2 years (they are recent).

I'd say Target's VISA, it's only a Credit Card, no balance transfers, no visa checks, no bullshit.

Do you have any kind of bank account, like a savings or checking account, say with BofA? I only had one card before with Chase, which was cosigned under my dad's name, had it for about 2 years. I've had a savings account with BofA since ~1994 and I opened up a checking account last year, then when I applied for their credit card, they gave me a $7,500 credit limit, because I've been such a long time customer.

I agree with the rest, pay it off in full every month. I see my credit card as a convenience, not the freedom to spend whatever you want.
