Siri Eyes Free - ILX 14' Base

Has anyone installed the Siri Eyes Free update on their 2014 ILX Base?

I noticed that we have pretty much exactly the same infotainment center as the premium, and the directions on how to download and install are out there, but did any of you try it? Thoughts?

This doesn't answer the first question, but as far as trying the update on your own, I would be very cautious. The dealer attempted to update mine and ended up bricking the HFL unit and had to have it replaced. So I still don't have the update, but I'll try again next service. I was originally going to do it on my own. Glad I didn't. IMHO having to replace the unit on your own dime would be a pretty sizable cost and just isn't worth the risk.

I'm tempted to try it, but I don't want to risk it.

But I sent the following letter to Acura corporate, yet they refused to provide an answer as to why the base is not eligible. I am glad I'm not the only one:

I very recently purchased a 2014 Acura ILX Base, and I am quite jubilant
with the decision. Although the car is in its primitive stage, I am glad that
the ILX meets Acura’s badge of innovation, technology, and value. But I have a very deep concern: Acura’s neglect of its customers.

Last week, via Honda’s official press release, I was informed of the
long-heard rumor that Apple’s Siri Eyes feature would be coming to Acura’s ILX and RDX models, respectively. I, however, was informed that only the ILX Premium and Tech would be eligible for an upgrade. I was appalled – extremely
appalled.

How could it be that one of the versions – coincidentally the most
economical one – could be deemed ineligible? The tech features in the Base are
identical to that of the Premium; the 5-inch displays are identical and operate
within the same software programing to that of the Premium; the Premium, according to Acura's official website, does not include AcuraLink; the only noticeable difference is a nifty XM satellite radio. So why would Acura negate a
portion of its customer?

I urge you to reconsider your company’s view that only the Premium and Tech
are eligible for an upgrade. As a long-time Acura driver, I, along with the
thousands of other ILX Base owners, am finding it extremely agonizing that
a certain segment of the Acura ILX family are blatantly being alienated and
estranged. At a time when Acura sedans are facing stiff completion from
rivaling carmakers, its loyal customer base should at least continue to
receive basic technological upgrades, especially if it seemingly possible.

I look forward to hearing from you.

That is very strange. Unless they have a very good technical reason of why the base can't receive the update (which I don't think they do) there's no reason why they should pull an Apple here and only update 2 of 3 trim levels with the new feature. All I can think of is that they must be trying to make it a distinguishing feature between the premium package and base.

Flyers, I think thats exactly it. I just called my dealer here in NJ.. I'll confirm to see if they do it. If not, I think they are just separating the base model from the premium/tech. Its a shame too since it is such an easy update and really useful safety feature!

ILX6speed, you have the premium/tech version?

Safety feature my ass. If it was a safety feature it would be available. Its a piece of floss. Hence why Acura doesnt care too much.

If it was a safety feature it would make the car worth more and would be on every ilx out there.

usdm, are you saying its not safer to press the steering wheel button than fiddling with a phone in your hand?

I'm not sure why they couldn't just make this standard on all ILX's either though, its too easy/free not to.

And FINALLY, a car whose sportiest version offers more than just black or red interior. Drives me nuts that manufacturers don't offer the other colors when you get to this trim level.
