New Car

Hey everyone,

I recently got the new ILX and was wondering what was everyone's input about breaking in a new car. I read different guides that say the complete opposite and was just wondering what you guys did.

Generally, don't floor it and you should be OK.

My general rule is go easy on it the first 1,000 miles. It's like that saying, opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one. Unless it states something clearly in the owners manual, people will tell you 10,000 different methods.

I think Honda manuals say 600 miles for the break in period during which time you shouldn't go over a certain RPM.

My RL manual says this:
Break-In Period
Help assure your vehicle’s future reliability and performance by paying extra attention to how you drive during the first 600 miles (1,000 km).
During this period:
Avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration. Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles (300 km). Do not change the oil until the scheduled maintenance time. You should also follow these recommendations with an overhauled or exchanged engine, or when the brakes are replaced. Do not tow a trailer.

Looks like this was moved from Car Talk.

Hondas/Acuras have a pretty standard break-in. It is specified in the manual but is pretty much as oo7spy notes above.
