Hybrid Rear Spoiler
Hybrid Rear Spoiler
After seeing the hybrid rear spoiler with the chrome trim piece, I can't see putting on one of the plain ones. Any thoughts on where to find the hybrid spoiler? No one seems to have a part number so far.
Even with the springs (which you would have to order separately) the total is much less.

I think the problem isn't that it doesn't raise fully up, but that it doesn't stay up. The trailing edge of that lid is pretty close to my head as it is!
When buying my car I said I wanted the hybrid spoiler and they said they couldn't do it, that it wouldn't fit (??) but they could do an accessory spoiler.
It seems to me anything put on the trunk lid may require better springs, including the accessory spoiler. I can't imagine the trunk lid itself is a different part. Thus, I have to ask, is there an order from Acura for dealers not to put Hybrid spoilers on non-Hybrid cars?
I don't know why, but the springs on the non-hybrid models are pretty weak and barely work to raise the trunk (even without a spoiler). I can only imagine that the trunk wouldn't open when you've got some snow on it. But, to your question Rocket, I think the hybrid spoiler not being an optional install has something to do with the fact that most dealers are really ignorant to what does and doesn't fit. They don't really research part numbers, etc and just go by the book with that stuff.
Here's my take: it has nothing to do with being lazy. It has everything to do with Acura not listing a fitment guide for the hybrid spoiler on a regular trunk lid. I am pretty sure it will fit but I'm not 100% sure. I am positive that the dealer feels the same way: ie. who wants to drill a trunk lid only to find out there is a slight variance? Then they are on the hook for replacing the trunk lid, a bad survey, potential paint mismatch, a deal falling through, etc.
The accessory spoiler includes a new pair of torsion bars that will hold the (now heavier) trunk lid up. If you were to purchase the hybrid spoiler as a replacement part, you would need to buy the replacement part torsion bars as well. I don't know why, but none of our cars that use torsion bars for the trunk lid have springs strong enough to fully raise the trunk lid when you remotely "pop" the trunk. I don't know if this is normal in the automotive industry overall, but I've grown accustomed to it over many, many Honda and Acura cars.

Just saw that the trunk is a different part number between the ilx hybrid and the non hybrid...not sure what that means in terms of outer dimensions, but it could be a different design. Or it could mean something as small as a trim piece distinguishes the two.
yeah, please keep us updated. I looove the hybrid spoiler, so if that turns out to be a viable option I (and I'm sure others) would love to hear about it.
The Hybrid Spoiler will work on the regular ILX
I spoke with Delray Acura today and had the good fortune to work with Jeanette there. There is indeed a different trunk part number for the Hybrid ILX because that trunk has more holes pre drilled to accommodate the Hybrid spoiler. Since that hybrid trunk and spoiler came that way from the factory already assembled. The standard trunk does not have these holes so we have a little work in drilling those extra holes to affix the hybrid spoiler. The trunk contours are the same! Worth it in my opinion since I have the Hybrid spoiler on order now. I'll let you know more when I do the install.
Received the Hybrid spoiler and it looks great. The folks at DelRay Acura packed this superbly. I'm studying the mounts as you would need to drill at least 8 holes to install this spoiler on the non hybrid trunk. It is not heavy and I may opt to use 3M double sided automotive trim tape instead to mount this. I used 3m tape to mount a Civic spoiler that was much heavier with great results and no looseness in over three years. The problem with drilling all the holes is that there is no template included and there are too many ways to screw yourself in getting this aligned properly. I'll post pics later to show what I mean.
I test fitted the Hybrid spoiler without the bolts (actually plastic plunger type push down retainers that are easy to remove) and it fits well on the standard trunk. I'm going to use the 3 M double sided tape to mount it. If that doesn't look right, I can always break out the drill. Just waiting for warmer weather so I get a good tape bond.
Interested in how this looks. The dealer was trying to sell me a 5000 miles demo model ILX Tech for the same price that had all of the body kit features. I didn't like the idea behind a demo model, and truly thought that the accessory spoiler looked kind of ridiculous. The Hybrid spoiler looks more sleek. I might want to add it to my car in the future if it looks good. I have the dealer installing splash guards this weekend. I'm not a fan of the under body kits.
Also, is this my imagination or is that chrome on the lower bumper in this photo. Looks interesting...

The spoiler looks great mainly I think, because it is smaller than the add on spoiler the dealer sells and the chrome strip on the Hybrid spoiler adds a great finishing touch.
On your contemplated purchase of the demo unit. 5 K miles is very high and with that many different drivers, I'd be cautious. They would have to cut you quite a deal to offset that. I also think the front, rear, and side skirts really don't add much of anything. This is not a "boy racer" type of car IMO.

On another note, I purchased the polished metal metallic hybrid spoiler from AcuraOEMparts.com today.
When it comes I'll decide whether to install it myself like this:
http://www.heeltoeauto.com/installs/...foam-tape.html, or to take it to a body shop and have them install it with bolts and tape. I won't be drilling into my own trunk.
Yes I got the hybrid spoiler installed and it looks really right for this non hybrid ILX! I did use the 3M double sided red faced black trim tape. Bought a couple of rolls of this and removed the push in mounts that came with the spoiler and applied this 3m tape all over the underside. When you do this, be sure to dry fit the spoiler to check if you have the tape built out enough so it will adhere to the trunk! This will also let you see if there are any high points that will keep the spoiler from fitting flush to the trunk. I measured the distance from each side to be sure the spoiler was centered and laid down a little masking tape at each end of the trunk so the spoiler would line up properly. When you progress to affixing the spoiler, line up the back of the spoiler to the edge of the trunk lid and push forward applying steady pressure all along the spoiler. Use a towel and your hands to apply this downward pressure at least periodically for the next 24 hours and don't drive in the rain for at least 48 hours! Most important, is take your time. I used this same process for my 2009 Civic and my 2007 Accord with lasting results. The factory mounting method requires at least 8 holes to be drilled on the truck lid so if the above tape process doesn't work, you can go that route. A note of caution! If you use a hair dryer to warm things up, be careful as the spoiler is made if ABS and could warp if you lay on too much heat! I can't seem to post pictures on this site so email me @ robtroxel@gmail.com for a couple of shots.
Great Question! I'm happy to say that the heavier duty trunk springs were not required! The trunk lid stays open just fine when fully extended. When you pop open the trunk, it lifts approximately 3 inches above the trunk sill which to me is better than having it open completely to catch a gust of wind. The spoiler itself is quite light, being constructed of ABS plastic.
My trunk barely lifts when I open the latch and makes a clicking noise when I fully extend it. huh, I may need to take it in as it looks like my springs aren't operating properly. Haha, this will be the 3rd time I take the car in.
This might be a way to get the HD trunk springs as a replacement. There must be an adjustor>>check the torsion bars as there is a plastic separator that might be missing that isolates the trunk bars from each other. You could have the opening remote cable binding somewhere near the trunk lid. Look on the driver's side trunk trim. It is fairly easy to pull back this trim to look if you have a trim puller for the push in plastic pins.
