2016 ilx k&n intake in the works
Hey guys I just received a great email from k&n and I will be dropping off my 2016 ilx off at their facility monday November 30 so they can make an intake for it. Ill keep this post updated with pictures and all information I receive from them (as much as they say I can atleast)

I have no plans on doing a before and after dyno. For such a small addition I cant justify the cost of going to pay for some dyno pulls. Ill just take the ones they provide for my information.

I hope they do something to the effect of your design. The only reason i would think they might not would be to potential liability issues if someone hydro locks their engine. But if they put a bypass inline that would avoid this issue. Would you mind if i showed them the pictures of your setup?

It only makes sense to utilize that front air vent/dam, I mean once you take the factory air box out theres so much space to make improvements in piping diameter and such.
The OEM spec sheet states the '16 ILX uses a 'cold air' intake from a vent by the front grill.. but honestly the ones by the bumper are just sitting there waiting to be tapped.
CT-Engineering aka CompTech did a similar setup for older Civics and Integras. Used a lower snorkel section for cold air access but mounted a high-flow unifilter + velocity stack in an OEM like air box. Its a great setup thats impossible to hydrolock.

That looks like a great design and if they dont make it like that I will probably make something to utilize the free space. Thanks for the info

K&n contacted me today saying I can pick up my car on Monday. They had to make some changes and the intake will be done Monday. I will post pictures as soon as I get back home and get good pictures.

I'm sure we'll all be getting them in the first batches. Maybe they will do a Acurazine Apprecieation pre-sale?
As much as I love my DIY mod (was a great excuse to rip my bumper off and tinker with a brand new car) im sure a fully built/engineered system will perform better. Maybe provide a bit more sound to the engine too.

I wouldnt hold your breath on the intake performing any better than stock.
Might be a TAD better. But honda/acura has always done an exceptional job with their intake systems. As well, even not considering honda/acura, its becoming common knowledge than most aftermarket systems wont do much of anything. Check out MightyCarMod vids to prove that.
Though obviously I throw on an intake. But for me it was about the bling of a "performance" part even though I know its not performing much better if any.
It does change the sound though for sure.

I'm hoping its a clever pressurized intake box w/ lower snorkel. But in all honestly they probably made a shortty with a heat shield/maybe a lower vent area.
Frankly if they can make a shorty design that is insulated from heat soak, and provides same (if not maybe 5hp increase) with some added induction noise. I'd be happy. I want my A-Spec to have some bite to it.

So I Just got back from picking up my car from K&N and here is the intake.
As you can see they branded it under their child company AEM.
The intake provided a peak hp gain of 15 hp (from 5700 - 6000 rpm) with most of the power band picking up about 5-7 hp range.
On the torque side the intake provided a gain of 13 ft-lb (again from 5700 - 6000 rpm) with the same 5-7 ft-lbs from 3000-5700.
As shown below the the utilized the stock snorkel section of the OEM section and placed a heat shield to keep the temps down.
The sound of the intake is throaty when you are on the throttle about 50% or more, but at highway speeds light throttle (flat land) I cannot hear it at all vs the stock set up.

What are your personal opinions and experiences with it so far?
also, so is it an intake that is already in production (with a AEM product number that can be purchased online?) or was it new constructed during the time they had your vehicle?

I like it so far but I've only had it for a few hours now (about 40 miles driven)

Take this with a grain of salt but I highly doubt the intake alone with no tune would product 5-7hp let alone 15hp. It is after all just a pipe with an oversized pod filter. These have been disproven 100 times by countless people to improve any performance numbers without a tune.
We need some dyno sheets to prove these results because if that is true that is amazing. I'll suspend by belief until charts are provided. Cars like these dont typically get ANY hp increase with just an intake. Even with a tune, intake alone producing 15hp is superb and honestly unbelievable.

All that said... even my intake advertises to have over a 5hp gain and I can tell you 100% this is false without any sort of aftermarket tune. But that also being said, I have heard that typically you wont feel an increase of 5hp so we wouldnt know the increase was there without charts showing so.

A 5 hp increase is not noticeable in the lower to mid range as you stated, and as I stated the 15 was only from 5700-6000. So in day to day operation the hp increase will never be noticed or used. The reason I believe the 15 hp gain was due to the better air flow in conjunction with vtec at higher rpms.

I have the dyno chart sitting on my desk, this is where I got the numbers from. However I cannot show the chart as stated form k&n because the product has not been released to the public.

Did they run the car on a physical dyno or plug it into a computer for theorized dyno numbers? Id assume a computer dyno which may explain the optimistic numbers. 15hp is just A LOT of HP to gain from a small 4banger with no tune. Even a V6 TL wont see 15hp from an intake and the larger engines typically see better numbers from a mod like this.
As I said. I'll suspend belief until we see the numbers. As well, I would suggest anyone looking to buy take those numbers with a grain of salt as, like i said, POD filters have been proven time and again to not give any increase. As well, this is a simple SRI with a small heat shield. Literally just a tube and filter. No possible way a tube and filter added 15hp. Just no way. My so take it for what its worth.
Also please dont think Im just hating as that is where all these conversations go. I too have an intake which I do love but reality is it doesnt do much of anything on a stock car minus the change in sound. Takeda claims MORE than a 5hp increase which is just over optimistic at best and horse shit and worse. Talk to the TL guys that have heavily modded their intakes/engine and they'll echo my claims.

They have also done CAI videos for NA and turbo cars. All videos showed
1. Heatsink isnt a big deal once car is in motion
2. Aftermarket intakes dont do anything over stock
3. CAI doesnt do anything over SRI
4. Losing 10lbs would have more gains more than a new intake
5. Faster/larger engines gain more from intakes
Even after all this I still would have gotten the intake. Just saying though. 15hp is nuts. MightyCarMods showed a 1.3l can actually lose power while a 2.something had no gains. Based on this a V6 will probably have minimal gains but still not "worth" it if you are only concerned with HP.

I dont think your hating, i knew going into this that the gains if any would be minimal. Also you have to realize that if a company can improve in volumetric effency of a engine the engine will perform better.

Thmanx yes the lower box is retained, so yes you can use your lower ram section. By the way where did you get the plastic bends? Ill be pulling off my bumper soon to install the aero kit so perfect time to add the ram air section.

Any word on SMOG Legality? Since it's being branded as AEM, I'd image it will be released as a SMOG legal kit. Most of their Intakes are OBD approved.

And seriously fingers crossed those numbers are real. Would be amazing! Cant wait for the product to release.
My 2.0 engine sits identical to the new 2.4 auto (opposite of the 2.4 manual) so this intake may even fit in the 2013-2015 2.0 ilx. Looks like it to me.

Heres where I got my pieces to construct my intake. Note you will need to do some Hacksaw-Cut work as the composite piping is a single mold.
Just spend some time cutting and getting your bends in the right location, Use some Clamps and Zip ties to lock everything together and in place. And have fun.
All and All about $200 in parts once you factor in shipping and such.
Mock up used home-made Duck-tape couplers to check fitment and angle (two sides stuck together, so the pieces could slide and angles changed
And Once mounted
