2013/14 ILX 6-speed issue

Anyone else out there with the 6-speed ILX having an issue with the push button start not working the first time every time? Mine provides 3 different messages, but registers no error in the onboard computer. Acura customer service has been no help and wants me to begin the documentation process with my dealer again(The 2013 was bought back for the same reason).

Please give us all the info you have.

Did the 2013 do it literally every time.
Does the 2014 literally do it every time.
What are these error messages? Three different messages?

If anything take pictures of the error messages so we can all see and attempt to help.

The three messages are as follows:

1. "Push clutch to start car"
2. "Move key closer to ignition to start car"
3. "Alternate power only."

1. Clutch is to the floor, foot on brake, I move neither, push button again car starts.
2. Key is in my right hand pushing the button (less than 2" from it)
3. No explanation

It is very random when it occurs. No set # of times starting the car before the error happens. The 2013 & 14 both did it. The 2014 was happening at a greater rate.
I have driven a standard for over 20 years, so it is not my lack of experience.

The 2013 was already declared a lemon, which is why I have a 2014. Acura wants me to start the process of declaring it a lemon from scratch. My point to them is, the specs on the 2014 are the same as the 2013, the finding will be the same. At this point, I don't want another one, I just want my money back to buy a car with no known issues, because as of now I am paying for a car that has yet to her delivered. I didn't buy a car that doesn't function correctly, I bought an Acura ILX. When they finally come to their senses, I will be leaving Honda/Acura altogether, and I have been a loyal customer for over 20 years now.

You are the first person I've heard of this issue and you've had it twice. I've only had rare instances when I hit the start button too fast (ie. before the clutch is fully depressed).

I've had this happen to my once but im pretty sure i prematurely pressed the button and didn't have my foot on the break hard enough.

Could be environment related, possibly like a scanner or phone might be interfering with the ignition.

But for the same exact same issue to happen on a completely different car is wired.

Seems like a manufacturer's defect in my opinion. It is also annoying because of the limited # of manual transmissions they sell, that they did not QC this before putting it on the market.

Not trying to blame you, just solve it. But it could legitimately be you or something near your home interfering with the signal. YOU are the common denominator between the 2 cars. The chances of YOU getting 2 lemons with the EXACT same problem, and no one else is really reporting it, are just not likely odds. Like does this happen somewhere other then your home? (probably does, next) . What do you always have on you when this happens? (CELL PHONE probably) Were/are your windows tinted? The tint film can interfere with the signal if its not a certain type, I believe ceramic. ANY other aftermarket product used on BOTH cars? ESPECIALLY ANYTHING electronic?(subs, wiring, grounding, amps, gps units, gopros, cameras, speakers, these can ALL affect it.) I wanted to get a sub put in myself (at least) but then the actual dealer techs just kept telling me about how everything is real sensitive now, and that people's stock OEM electronics are always having problems because of aftermarket products interfering with them. They were like "NO don't do it."

It happens in different locations. The service dept. at the dealer has been able to reproduce the issue. There is nothing after market on my car. "aomechmarine" how many manual transmissions did Acura sell in 2013? Do you know? The people I have spoken with at Acura don't. Most people will consider it their mistake, that they must not have pushed the clutch firmly enough, or tried to start the car before getting fully in the car, but what about the "move key closer to start car" message? I push the button with my right hand and the key has been in that hand every time. Can't get much closer than that. I have had friends with me when it has occurred and they were surprised that the car didn't start. I say it is a manufacturers defect, because there are 2 switches that have to be in sync at all times and not just the one switch like an automatic.

It's just veeery coincidental that you had 2 cars see the same issue. Very very odd.

I too have seen my ilx not start once but I know I wasn't on the brake quick enough.

Good luck with the issue op.

@Jb3stix - What about cell phone? You didn't answer that one... different phones, give off and receive different signal frequencies. Might need to change carriers, or phones. Not really, just saying tho...

The guy in the Service Dept. that reproduced it has an iPhone, I have a Droid, so I don't think it is the phone. For those of you still saying I am the common denominator, please read again, The SERVICE DEPT. AT MY DEALER HAS REPRODUCED THE ISSUE(different denominator).

I don't know what to tell you, but everything we suggest you have an answer for. Good luck getting this resolved. (As for the number of manual transmission sold, this is not published however, if you calculate MTs as somewhere between 5-10% of total volume you might get a rough idea)

Thanks Colin, like I have said, Acura bought back the 2013 and issued me a 2014. I think the part that burns me the most is the Acura Clients Relations rep. stating since I had reported the issue, he has been monitoring it on his Honda. He said it happened on his Honda as well(Auto trans.) and that it is random, so I shouldn't consider it a big deal. Seriously?

Well again - did you try NO PHONE AT ALL? not trying to be an ass... just that thats exactly what troubleshooting is. trying everything - still not your fault just sayin. And both phones COULD interfere. See thing is - SOMETHING IS. But what? who knows? Could definitely see your frustration, shouldn't be your responsibility to figure that out. should be trouble free to begin with.

aomechmarine, I left my phone at home for a day to see if I got lucky enough(meaning unfortunate) for the issue to rear its ugly head, it did. I tried it another day and the issue did not happen, so, it is not my phone. Not too worry, I appreciate the input as who knows, you may find out how to correct the issue before Honda Corp. does.

Wow. MAN that sucks. Well at least you tried troubleshooting phone. That is maddening man. I never really been a phone person, but I'm starting to use it a lot more because of dating and work, and that would REALLY piss me off to have no phone for even a day now.... Man return that car NOW, haha... Yeah I would seriously just get frustrated and give up after I felt like I tried everything, it really does seems like you have... The crazy thing is it could be all kinds of stuff, like some cell tower near your work, or a radio signal near your house, or the actual unit that receives the signal is just defective, (most likely).... whatever the case, not your problem. Just get what you can back, and walk away man.... wow...

Reason I know a little about this stuff is the military. I work with munitions, and we have to learn about all kinds of signals to prevent them from setting off the munitions.... There is too many possible factors, although really most likely it IS simply a defective signal receiving unit. Usually the most obvious answer is correct. Actually semi-kinda related, I'm getting super frustrated with google maps, it drops signal all the time on my phone, and what good is that if I have to look at it and press buttons for it to resume? It's dangerous messing with your phone like that on the highway. I'm just gonna spend the cash and buy a dedicated GPS unit. You know sometimes being cheap can turn out pretty expensive.

One thing you can try, that might work depending on what phone and Google OS you have, is uninstall updates to Google Maps. Google inexplicably ruined the interface when they eliminated the separate Navigation app and integrated it into Maps. Just go to Manage Apps, select Maps, and select Uninstall Updates.

Another thing you can do is clear some memory on the phone by uninstalling (or uninstalling updates to) apps you don't use, and clearing caches. I did that and Android runs much smoother.

One more suggestion: A few months ago I was in L.A. trying to get back to the airport, and every time I launched Navigation/Maps it dropped GPS, data and phone signal. Thankfully I made my flight, and when I got home I took the phone to Verizon to find out WTF had gone wrong. Turns out that a Network Mode setting had somehow been changed from "LTE/CDMA" to "Global." To check this, go to System Settings, select "More..." under "Wireless & Networks," select "Mobile Networks," select "Network Mode," and make sure "LTE/CDMA" is selected.
