Upconverting dvd player question.
My friend has a rear projection tv from about 5 years ago....it's HD ready, but only has component cables for HD. I told him upconverting DVD players only use HDMI...and that it would not work with his older HD TV. Is this correct?
I don't think that is the case. I know that my XBOX360 displays 720p via component cables. My cable box did as well... so the if the output of the upconverting DVD player is 720p or 1080i, the component cables should be able to handle it. Of course it would look even better with HDMI or DVI cables, but using component should still work.
^ I'm not 100% sure, but the upconverting is done via the player and has nothing to do with the disc. The disc is just... well... a disc. All of the processing is done via the player.
Again, not 100% sure. From what I've read I've decided to stay away from upconverting DVD players and I let the TV do the converting (DVD sends it 480p, TV converts it to its native 720p)...

^ Well pretty much all HD-TVs will convert input signals to their native resolution.... so it should convert the signal to either 720p or 1080i automatically...
I have a Sony CRT HD-TV from around 2003 and it converts all inputs to native automatically... so he should be OK. Finding or downloading the manual is the best way to confirm for sure...

It's a mitsu from about 5 years ago. I guess he will have to check his manual.
Is it possible that older models don't automatically convert to native unless configured manually in the setup menu?

Update.....
Took a look at the TV yesterday...TV has a setting for 480p or 960i for DVD component input in the settings menu. I never heard of 960i. His DVD is a progressive scan player...should he run it at 480p or set the TV for 960i? Would a 960 interlaced picture be better than a 480p? I know 1080i would be better, but the only options are 480i, 480p, or 960i.....anyone?
Trying to work with what Juniorbean said in having the TV do the upconverting versus getting an upconvert player that may not work with his component only connection.
