Up-converting DVD player-No HDMI on TV

Gents,

I just purchased a Samsung Up-Converting DVD player being 99% sure my 27in. LCD had HDMI inputs... However, I was WRONG. No HDMI on my TV.

So, my questions: Is the up-converting DVD player worth it when just using component cables, or should I bring it back and go for the simple half-priced Progressive Scan model?

AND, If I got the progressive scan model, should I get compenent cables, or will my surplus of S-Video cables be just as good?

Thanks for your input.

There are very few models out there that will upconvert over component. My DVD player will upconvert over component (Samsung HD941). However I had to enter a code to enable this.

So unless you find a player capable of this, it'll just send a 480p picture; just like a progressive DVD.

I have the Samsung HD860, and, according to cnet, it does have component video output.
will component be good enough to get the most out of this machine, or should I just return it for a cheaper progressive scan?

I don't think the 860 will do upconversion through component. Therefore I'd return it.

If you end up just going with a regular progressive scan dvd player, you will want to use component cables and not s-video. Also as someone asked, does the tv have DVI inputs? You could just use a dvi to hdmi cable along with some audio cables.

Thanks for your Input guys!

This is exaclty what I have decided to do...
While the TV does not have HDMI, it does have DVI.
SO, I have decided to keep the player and ordered a HDMI -> DVI cable from Monoprice (Only $4.65 today!)

Thanks again for your help!

UPDATE:

Got the HDMI -> DVI cable from monoprice.com in the mail yesterday and it looks GREAT in 720p...1080i mmmm not so much... BUT, the picture is far better than it was with the component cables previously used.

I also got the same cable to replace the components going from my cable box to my TV in the living room. Picture quality gains appear to be marginal on most HD channels, but DiscoveryHD and INHD look fantastic! Why just those two channels?
