Thoughts on...

This 52" LCD from Sony????

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665430100

It's NOT a 120Hz TV, which I'm not so sure is worth it.

Money, mostly...

Another option is the 600 series from Samsung. Sears has the A650 52" for just $1799 + tax. Amazon is selling it for over $1900.

Only reason I was asking about the Sony is it can be had for $1799 with a BR player.

Yep, main TV. In the family room, on the wall.

Are you set on an LCD? Just a thought, but my buddy just picked up the Samsung 50PNa550 50" Plasma for $1399, and it looks awesome!

We have a lot of light in the room, so we'd get too much glare from a plasma. And I prefer LCD over plasma.

I brought a Samsung 5 Series LCD before the holiday price drops. I love the picture on the TV, my only regret (besides paying to much) is not getting 120Hz. My only saving grace is this TV is going in my bedroom once I get my house next year. If this is going to be your main TV and your looking to do Blu-Ray, then go for the 120Hz. Do it right the first time, go for the 6 Series.

Erm...from what I've heard, you don't want the 120Hz on when watching movies. I've heard it gives a weird effect making it seem like a video instead of film. Noobs have returned the Sammy LCD's because they were watching everything on 120hz and thought the picture was horrible. 120Hz is a great feature, but the only time that the benefits will be reaped from it is things like sports.

I feel the 120Hz isn't necessary and tends to make the picture cartoonish. I think it's overrated and a little bit of a marketing hype. Maybe go check one out at Best Buy or something to be sure if you like it.

Well now we're confusing 120hz TV with Samsungs Auto Motion Plus. The TV itself is 120hz, but the Auto Motion Plus is what causes the soap opera/cartoon effect. And you don't want it turned on for Blu-Ray movies. Its not one in the same is it?

Nope, I've witnessed the cartoonish behavior on other brands with 120Hz.

yea, but its called other things like motionflow. What Im saying is, just cuz a tv says its 120hz doesn't mean its going to change/distort the picture of a blue-ray.

That's a key point since Blu-Ray can have its content stored as either 1080/24p or 1080/60i. So if you don't like the way 120Hz looks for broadcast HD then I would think that the odds decent you probably won't like the way it looks for a 60i Blu-Ray. You may, however, find a 24p Blu-Ray to be tolerable if not enjoyable.

I wish companies would do a better job of telling what format their video is in. The only Blu-Ray I've noticed that explicitly states 24p is the Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds disc. I would hope that a fair number of movie releases are in 24p but the packaging never seems to say so.

Tempting.. Very tempting..

I'd go and check out the LCD's in store and see what you think. The BR is tempting but you might be kicking yourself if next year at Xmas time they are around $100..

Do you currently own a BR?

I'm partial to Samsungs so I'll save my opinion on which set to pick.. I was surprised to see the Amazon so expensive. I checked on Friday for a friend and it was $1790 shipped for the 52 650.

And lastly, of course the Superbowl is coming up so I'd hold up until next week and see what kind of deals are out there,

The 950 IS the best, but I doubt Scrib is wanting to pay that much for a set.

950 isn't a option I don't think unless you really have alot of money laying around.

I quoted him saying he was also looking at the Samsung 650. I said it had the best panel available, except for the Samsung 950, which as STL+3.0CL mentions, is probably out of Scrib's budget.

If you are gonna watch sports on it.......I'd go 120hz.

Does it process 24 frames?

I don't have a budget, per se... But I don't want to spend that kind of dough on a TV.

I went to BB and they had the Sony and Samsung close to one another. I was able to tweak the TVs to try and even the settings. I found the Samsung to have a much better picture. I have a 40" Samsung and 40" Sony now, and find the Samsung to be superior.

I just may pull the trigger on the set through Sears. They have a 30-day price guarantee, so if things get better, I'll be covered for a bit. This sale is only good through this weekend.

^Amazon ships with Eagle, who sets it up for you too (white glove delivery). They want to make sure it works/wasn't damaged before they leave.

I actually called them and told them to give me a buzz ahead of time and I'd meet them at my place. They were cool with it and it gave me a few hours notice as to when they'd be there. Took awhile for delivery but was worth it(free)..

Yea, but I work downtown Chicago, so I can't exactly get home in a pinch...

It'll drop.. Just have to keep a eye on it.. Maybe the Sears deal is the way to go with the price match for a month.

I had them call me, too, but I'm only 20 minutes away at the most. Take a half day/whole day/work from home?

EDIT: and you can negotiate with Sears, too.

But the Sears deal, I pay full price and get 10% via rebate. So it'd be $2140 and I'd get $200 back for a total of $1940. Amazon is $1900, all done. And, just noticed there is the following:

Get a $200 Gift Certificate to NFLShop.com
Buy any Samsung HDTV that's $1,000 or more and get a $200 gift certificate via mail-in rebate good for official NFL gear from NFLShop.com. Offer ends January 31. Restrictions apply.

Not sure what I'd do with $200 at the NFL Shop, but that makes it $1700.
