Sony DVP-NS75H (upconverting dvd player)

Does anyone own one of these? What are your thoughts on how well it performs the upconversion via HDMI?

I just picked one up yesterday for only $116! Some of the reviews compare it favorably to the Denon DVD-3910, which is much closer to $1,000.

I'm not ready to plunge into the Blue ray vs. HD-DVD world yet as I don't want to spend good cash on what may become obsolete depending on the outcome. I also want to make sure there are enough titles available to make me happy.

I can't hook it up to the HD TV yet as it's still in the box and won't be mounted for another week or so.

Just wanted a few opinions on results you may have experienced from this player. I think it's a great deal for the $$ vs. other upconverting dvd players.

i got the samsung 860 dvd upcovert before this one and i tested it on my 42" samsung plasma which iv had for about 6 months and used it for less than 10 hours. i thoguht my tv was broke and was about to call samsung for warranty. it made the picture all grainy with black and white spots all over. horrible. i exchanged it for the sony since it had great reviews. plugged it into the 42" sammy plasma and wow it was day and night difference. also tested it out on my brand new ld 32lc2d. great picture. this dvd upcovert does the job! even without the hdmi cable its still pretty dam clear. highly recommend this dvd upcovert! all reviews point out this as the best player for your money.

I have the DVP-NS70H and I have been happy with it. The picture looks great and it plays everything. I also have a Samsung upconverting player and while the picture still looks awesome upconverting, it has trouble playing some of my older 8x DVD-R discs.

Consider an upconverting unit that has the Faroudja chip (a.k.a. DCDi) in it. That particular Sony model doesn't have it.

jlukja For the DVD/CD Player I would consider:
For Oppo I would go with the Oppo DV-981HD. It has great specs and some really good reviews. (Note that it doesn't have Component Video Output, so you need an HDMI switching receiver or go directly to a display with an HDMI input.

I have the NS75H. It is difficult to tell if it really makes a difference. I compared a bunch of movies, and I can see some imperfections that I didn't notice before. However, I also was not looking very closely before I got the upconverting player, so it is possible that the picture is indeed clearer, and my eye is just catching these imperfections now that I am paying attention. If I had to do it again, I think I would get the Oppo, to make sure I am basically getting the best there is for this purpose.

I just wanted to update. I rewired my system. I didn't change how it's wired, just relocated the equipment since I bought a new stand. After installing everything, I took the time to calibrate stuff. I used the THX calibration that comes on one of the Star Wars DVD's. I think it's Attack of the Clones. Perhaps it's on the others too. I also set the DVD player to Cinema 1 after going through the other settings, I thought it produced the best color and picture. After doing both of these, the picture is far better then it was. I put in a bunch of dvd's to see, and I was impressed. Movies that are computer animated like Cars and Monster's Inc. has incredible color, and real life movies look great too (although not as much color, but that is expected). At this point, I am very happy with this player now.
