Sammy's new 46" LCD

For those who were considering the LN-S4695 or 96 you need to look at the LN-T4661F. It's been in BB and CC for about 2 weeks at the most and I got my first look today. It was noticeably better than the year old Samsung and Sony LCD's around it, even the 40" didn't look as sharp as the new 46".

New features include: 1.3 HDMI (which sounds like a better color selection for future broadcasts), 10,000:1 contrast (the 4696 has 6,000:1), 3 HDMI ports (including one on the lower left side), and 1:1 pixelation ratio (which somehow corrects overscan--I really don't understand how).

And it's only about $100 more expensive

For only $100, that's a big boost in contrast ratio and a 3rd HDMI input.

I agree. You can't get a Sony Bravia for that much sans the additional HDMI ports and contrast ratio.

Samsung FTW!

the 4665 actually uses a different panel from the 4661, which allows for better colors supposedly, it has a 15,000:1 contrast, vs the 10,000:1 on the 4661.

The only drawback is the new panel is actually glossy vs. traditional lcds. The picture is fuckin amazing for an LCD, best black levels i've seen on a tv yet. Makes me want to sell my 4095d and upgrade

I stand corrected. The 65 is a glossy finish, while the 61 is a matte finish. I've never seen a glossy finish, but that might get annoying at night with light reflections in the room.

I see that Samsung plans on releasing an 81 series in July that has an LED backed panel that has a 100,000:1 ratio due to segmented backlighting, i.e. only appropriate portions of the screen are backlit at one time to enhance white vs. black.

I have the S4696. It's an awesome TV. Although if this was in my main room, I would definitely want the HDMI 1.3. Otherwise, I have an HDMI 5 port switch hooked up to it now for the PS3, Cable, DVD player.

does hdmi 1.3 make more difference in sound or picture, and what is that new CEC feature they have on the new samsung lcds? I know it has something to do with controlling devices...

How are the blacks on your TV? One of the claims of the newer model(s) is blacks aren't crushed as much. Personally, I didn't see an issue at the store.

HDMI 1.3 is mostly for picture, specifically color upgrades. It can support billions of colors and grays instead of the millions in a 24-bit HDMI. I think it also carries more room for smoother audio/video syncing and requires less compression of audio. Is it a noticeable difference?

The CEC allows different plug-in devices to communicate without having to change settings on your remotes. You could have the Dolby turned on and the TV would automatically switch to AV3 whenever you play a DVD for example.

how about these LED powered DLPs? is the only downside to DLPs is that they typically can't be wall mounted? it seems like with LED technology they have made them slim enough to be wall mountable...

My Dad already purchased this damn thing haha. I told him about it 4 days ago too!

I haven't seen it but he says he really likes it. He is going to the cable company tomorrow to get the HD box and then see how much he likes the HD.

I'm going to sell it before the LED-based Samsung's come out. Even though they'll probably cost $6k, I've been bitten by the LED bug.

Almost as excited about LED-based TV as I am an LED-based MacBook Pro.

Six grand? Well, at least they should knock a few hundred off the 61 series when they come out.

Looks like I'll be picking this puppy up in a few weeks or so. My TV just crapped out, perfect reason to upgrade.

so, onecall.com has a 18 months no payments/no interest right now... and the 46" Samsung LN-T4661F is on sale @ $2399 with shipping and since I'm in California (they're in Wa.), no taxes... I'm very tempted, but here's the question... do I go for the extended warranty?

Samsung will extend your warranty another 6 months if you ask, giving a total of 18 months. And what will one.com do if you need a fix? Send a guy out from Washington? Replace it? Doubtful. I don't buy extended warranties in general. But that is completely my own opinion. Some people swear by them for expensive items.

FYI, Amazon has this set for $2258 shipped.

^^^thanks!

but, after rethinking about the size of my bed room... 46" is way too big, my headboard is only about 10 feet away from where the TV would go (directly across) so I'll probably go with the 40"

My living room has a 46" DLP and my favorite spot to sit is exactly 9 feet from the screen. I don't feel like I'm too close. Then again, 40" might be about right for a smaller room like a bedroom.

just ordered it with onecall.com (via operator), I told him that Amazon.com has it for $2258, while he was putting this order together, I found another site that had it for $2228, so he matched it too (free shipping, no tax), hey... 30 bucks is 30 bucks

now, I gotta decide if I should move the Sammy 50" DLP (2nd gen.) into the bedroom and have the 46" New LCD in the living room... cuz, I'll probably end up getting the PS3 too... but probably not... the DLP's kinda bulky, and the flat panel LCD would be more appropriate for the smaller bedroom...

never mind, I'm just rambling cuz I'm excited

Nice. I'll be interested to see how you think the LCD compares to the DLP.
