Rooftop Antenna & Satellite Dish...
Rooftop Antenna & Satellite Dish...
I'm interested in installing a TV antenna on my roof, but I want to keep the cabling down to a minimum. I currently have satellite TV through Dish Network, so all the cabling between my TV and the roof is there.
Is there a way to multiplex/demultiplex the two signals so they can share the same cable?

Do you need an antenna on your roof or would a set-top antenna do the trick?
I assume you are asking because you have Satellite, but are not getting HD quality channels on your TV?
I don't have satellite myself, but I recently set-up my Father-in-law's new 1080p Sony Bravia. He has always had satellite, but never an HD TV until now, so he's never had any HD channels via satellite. What I did was simply wire the satellite to his TV via component cables and bought a small in-door antenna (it affixes itself to the back of the set itself) that connects to the TV via coaxial cable and provides local channels in VERY clear HD quality.
He has to switch input settings when he wants to watch Satellite or HD local channels, but he doesn't seem to mind.
Hope that was along the lines of your question...

Oh no, I get HD content via satellite just fine. I just want to set up a rooftop antenna for the techy/geeky-hobbyist side of me.
Satellite TV providers broadcast the major networks, but they don't broadcast the sub channels or some of the independent TV stations that may be in your area (at least that's how it is with Dish Network). And, where I live, I'm in limbo between two local channel regions (SF Bay Area and Sacramento). With a rooftop antenna, I may be able to receive some of the stations from both regions.
Do I need to? Of course not! But, the tecky/geeky side of me says it'd be cool to see what I can receive with a large HD antenna (something rated 70+ miles) on my roof.
I know that when a Dish Network installer comes out (that's who I have service through), they use a pair of mux/demuxers in order to utilize a single cable between the satellite receiver, the satellite dish, and the connection for "tv 2" (which is demuxed outside, and the feed then ran to the other room). This is so that there is a single cable passing through the wall.
I was just curious if anyone had experience with something similar, except with being able to mux/demux satellite dish and rooftop antenna signals.
If this isn't possible, I have no problem running a second coax cable to the roof. I was just hoping I could avoid it.

OMFG!!!
You know...I have a big bin of misc splitters/adapters/cables/etc. I kept everything from the dish install at my last place (and didn't give it to the installer,
). Maybe I already have a set of diplexers.
I think I have a couple of these...

Hmm...and come to think of it, a set is already used to get the "TV 2" signal from my receiver to the TV in my master bedroom. Maybe I can just tap into the VHF/UHF side...the dish receiver broadcasts an analog signal on like channel 27 or something...maybe I'll get lucky and it won't interfere with what's coming over the air. I believe the channel it broadcasts over is selectable, so if I'll select a frequency that isn't in use as according to antennaweb.org
Hmmm.....
This may not work...but it doesn't hurt to try!
