Receiver decisions

My Uncle just picked up a 1080p LCD.
He now realizes that he needs to update his old receiver because he wants to utilize the HDMI.

Any recommendations for a "budget" priced receiver with a min. 3 HDMI connections?

I looked at a few for him, but the few I looked at would only supply 720p from the receiver to the TV, or they did not allow for audio through the HDMI.

Anyone know of a unit that is "budget" priced but will allow for 1080 video AND audio through the HDMI switching?

Is TrueHD decoding a requirement?

I just noticed this is in the wrong forum. oops!

He just plunked down a large chunk of cash, not realizing that a new receiver was in order...so he is looking to spend as little as possible...and get as much as he can in terms of HDMI. Yea, I know....He wants his cake and eat it too.

I really don't know how much he is willing to spend...my guess: $400 - $600

I'd recommend checking out the Onkyo TX-SR605.

It supports HDMI 1.3a and decodes TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. It has only 2 HDMI inputs, but costs $500. Probably your best bet considering your price.

If you really need 3 HDMI inputs, there's the Sony STR-DG910. But if I were you, I'd consider the Onkyo, as it will be more future-proof.

Read up on the Onkyo TX-SR605...the only "bad" part I see is only 2 HDMI inputs, and the fact that it will downconvert 1080i component video to 720p when using an HDMI cable to the TV.

My only question is: The only thing I can think of that would carry a 1080i signal over component would be from a satellite/cable box/DVR.....but then again I would assume most new HD satelliet cable boxes have HDMI output anyway...so the component picture being downgraded to 720p would be moot...being that one would not use component, and would use the HDMI. no?

2 HDMI inputs may be enough...being that my Uncle would only have a satellite box & HD DVD hooked up via HDMI.....he's not a gamer....so I think 2 HDMI inputs would be enough.

My suggestion would be the Onkyo TX-SR674. Like the 605, but with better upconversion and no downconversion.

EDIT: Also, it converts analog inputs to HDMI outputs so that you can truly use just one cable to hook up the television. It's also fully 1080P compliant.

get the txsr-705 just bought one the other day and it is a fuckin badass receiver...

The 705 adds this to the 605:
10W more power per channel and Powered Zone 2 Output.
12V Trigger
IR in for Zone 2 IR extension
THX Select 2 certification
A 3rd hdmi input
A 3rd coax SPDIF Input
Optical SPDIF Output
Pre-outs for all 7.1 channels

i think its worth the price difference. retails for $799 u can find online for around $650
