Projection TV on the Fritz

We've got an older Sony 63" (61" ??) projection television that looks like it's "lost" it's green projector. I'd guess it's about 7 years old.

Anybody have a guess at repair costs? Info on this kind of failure/repair in general?

Edit: Model KP-61S70, Mfg 10/99.

If it's just replacing a projector, it's a relatively simple DIY.

No idea what it would cost to pay someone to do that. If it's anything else, I'd probably just get a new TV. Or just do that anyway .

Excellent Chilli.

Finding repair info on this model has been a PITA. Thanks.

Yeah, that's why I just grabbed some generic instructions. But it doesn't look bad. Finding the part might be, though (but I didn't have a part number).

A ten year old 12 year old TV.......you might want to upgrade.

HD picture quality on todays sets is amazing compared to HD ready sets from 12 years ago.

Not to mention the prices are quite cheap....compared to 12 years ago.

Turns out it's much more complicated. I've got individual CRT's and the green picture tube probably needs replaced (as far as I can tell). Part cost is ~$100 or so. But it's not really DIY-able from what I'm finding. So add tech/repair man costs.

Then, just to make things as bad as possible ( ), I should probably replace all 3 CRT's, not just the one. So, all in, it could be $400 - $500 to fix it.

The "New TV" idea might be the way to go.

Well, $500 to fix will still be cheaper, especially if you're looking to stay close to the 60" size. That said, Moog is right on all points. Like I said before, just get a new TV...you're not going to have much of a better opportunity to justify one. Get a nice LCD and put it on the wall...you'll be amazed how much bigger your room looks.

Have you looked at TV's locally on Craigslist? I can get pretty much what I have now, in working order, for Free - $250. Doesn't make repair seem like a cost effective option.

And I thought I might be able to recoup a few hundred dollars if I went with something new.

Yeah, most projection TVs are free, you just have to pick them up. Rent a truck and get a few friends together on a Saturday?

But, how long will the CRTs in that TV last? Might not work out so well if one craps out in the next couple of years. It's time to bite the bullet and upgrade. Even my parents have an LCD now. My mom complained at first because they didn't need a new TV, but after about a week of living with it, she loves it.

My parents had a Hitachi rear projection TV with the 3 RGB CRTs for a long time. The TV produced an awesome picture, but periodically needed adjustments. Performing a convergence adjustment on that TV was a frickin' nightmare as adjusting one area of the picture affected the other. I had nightmares of the various grids for the longest time .

This one has an automatic convergence circuit - Flash Focus they call it.

It might be that is what's failed. I've took the front and back panels off and the Green CRT works/illuminates. Searching further, it might be just a convergence circuit failure.

BUT I can't (yet) gain access to the Service Menu to do it manually. NONE of the menus or informaiton displays (channel, input source, display adjustment, volume bar, etc) show up. Don't know why.
