Poor picture on Sammy LN40a550

Hi all, I just bought this tv last night and watching dark knight and picture is very grainy. My blu ray is a Sony 350 and all cables are Monoprice. Then I put in american gangster, and there is excessive ghosting and the picture just looks like shit. Again this is straight out of the box.

Any trouble shooting tips.

Yes... Return and buy the 650..

Do you have another LCD in the house? How does HD cable/satellite look? How about standard movies? Are the HDMI cables the v1.3?

Yep, you need to tune it. I would suggest getting an Avia disk or something.

Also what would have to be adjusted to get rid of the ghosting? On dark knight if I go to ch 13 on blu ray the first 10 secs of that scene everything is ghosting. AND i cant return the TV without gettting charged a 15% restocking fee.

Is the DNIE turned on? When watching a Blue Ray I would have it in standard mode, without any extra bells and whistles turned on.

Best I can tell from their web site, Ovation still hasn't released Avia 2 on Blu-Ray. I would assume SD is probably still fine to use for setting your white and black points and calibrating the color which is 90+% of what you're doing to calibrate anyway. Still, if you're going to drop any money for a calibration disc, why not get one that comes on Blu-Ray and uses actual HD test patterns? I used the Video Essentials HD Basics on Blu-Ray and was happy with my results.

So after having issues with my 40 550. I got my TV replaced. They didnt have the 650 in stock so I got the 630. Not much difference and I like the bezel of the 630 better. Compared to my friends XBR the screen looks very similiar. Watched some bluray movies and was totally blown away.

Overall for $1100, this TV is great.
Now I guess I need to get the AVIA and get it all set correctly.

I'm extremely pleased with my KDL-40z4100. I bought it for $1399 before Christmas and I just recently saw Sears advertising the silver one for $1199. Crazy good deal.

Yeah, surround sound adds a whole nother' experience to watching movies. Its not all about what you see. Its also about what you hear and feel that makes a huge difference. I had not idea until we got our surround sound.
