PC vs Mac Debate

I currently own a Dell and bought an iMac for Christmas and returned it. Why?

Because Vista and Leopard are being released almost back to back and want to compare the pros/cons of each before making a final decision. I'm still leaning toward the mac since what I've read about Vista is not encouraging so far.

Anyone thinking the same thing?

From what I've seen and read of Vista it has nothing that isn't already in Tiger. That and the "requirements" to get the eye candy and other goodies out of Vista is a joke.

I found this to be a good read.

You should have a poll selection for "I own a PC, and will stick with XP"

Vista vs Leopard?

WTF

Not even a comparison. Adding some ooey-gooey eye candy to Windows does not OSX make.

Strip away the shabby copies of OSX effects from Vista and it's still just cruddy ol' over-bloated out-of-date Windows.

MS is crap, but it is the future. Sucks for us all. I haven't been a mac guy but I do hate windows a great deal.
I setup a few Macbook's the last few weeks & I must say they are really easy to use & work well. If I need a notebook in the future it will be a Mac.

There's really no reason to wait for it to have "Leopard out of the box", well, other then saving $100~ on an upgrade.

Upgrading OSX is not the heart transplant that is upgrading to Vista.

Upgrading OSX is literally ONE button click with almost no consequence or side-effects. It took under 15 minutes to upgrade from Panther to Tiger on my ol' Powerbook.

Is it really that easy?

If I only have to wait a few months to save a $100 bucks, no biggie. My Dell is 4 yo and still working fine, albeit slower to boot up than it used to be.

Yep, that easy.

Leopard should be available in June.

I was a die-hard Windows fan for years. Once I finally got fed up and switched to OSX simply LOOKING AT Windows became painful.

Every now and then I switch to my Window's PC to play a game or do some QA/Testing and I literally feel sick to my stomach. Once you grok OSX, using Windows is painful. Dreadful.

I'm probably going to get a 20" iMac when Leopard comes out. Although something in me needs to have a Mac Pro. But that thing might as well be called a server. I'm also assuming that iLife 07 will ship at the same time as Leopard.

I'll give my mini to my kid.

Oh and about the OS X upgrades. I also had no problem going from Panther to Tiger. When you also make the hardware that the OS is running on, there better not be any problems.

I've always been the 'tech support' guy for all of my friends, everyone calls me with their computer problems. Networking, virus stuff, whatever. When I had a pc also, I used to enjoy it... I got some satisfaction out of my ability to 'fix' windows. Now that I am used to OS X, I can't do that stuff anymore. This may or may not make sense, but the whole time I'm just thinking 'why do I have to deal with this? On a mac it just works'

There are some windows things I like better. I like the folder view in XP better for browsing files for example.

I have Vista on my homebuilt PC and OSX on my Mac Mini.

I like both

Each has their pluses and cons.

Vista has not given me any problems like some reviewers claim, it runs faster than XP in some cases. It seems to be just as stable, meaning no crashing. Networking seems to be better, especially with bittorrent.

Luckily, don't have to bring my work home with me very often. Thanks for your input, I was second guessing my decision to switch over. I can always get a cheapo laptop later on if need be.

Mac it shall be!

Now, do I spring for the Mac 20" cinema screen or go with a Sony XBR, decisions, decisions, hmm....

I wish Mac versions of games didn't cost 2-3x the cost of their PC counterparts.

Not to mention, they release them sometimes 2 or 3 years LATER. If at all.

What kind of stuff are you using it for? A mac mini and a 22" samsung lcd ($329 @ Costco) would be a nice set up.

I have been running the 32 and 64 bit versions in my office since it went RTM and have not had any problems what so ever and one of them is my main machine. Of couse with the low end graphics gard in the Dell GX280 I don't get any of the effects but this machine is 3 years old and it has no problem running Vista. It has not crashed or hung up since I booted it 2 months ago. (yes it has been powered on and running constantly)

Am I wrong to tell people, that pay me money to fix their machines, to keep buying windows machines? If I tell them to buy a mac they will never call me again.

You have no idea how much $ the spyware installer named IE has made me.

Not really a gamer, but I'd like to have a nice setup for photo editing. I have a ton of old prints both black & white and color that I'd like to organize, as well as two Sony digital cams which haven't exploited their full capabilities yet.

Ya, if you're a file "browser", Finder sucks.

Alot of people are hoping it goes away altogether in Leopard.

Personally, I almost never use Finder or navigate files in the traditional way. I use Spotlight or Quicksilver for most navigation.

Unless you're doing some serious video/media editing, or some other incredibly processor intensive operations, I can't see much reason for a Mac Pro over an iMac.

iMac's are no slouches.

The best you can do with a mini is the 1.83 core duo and Intel GMA 950... which should be fine for photos and normal stuff, might not be enough for serious video editing or video games.

You could run an external monitor in extended desktop mode on the iMac.

like beet pointed out, mini = slower processor, integrated graphics card, and a slower hard drive.

if you want flexibility just get a MacBook. you'll get iMac speed in a smaller form factor.

Where's the option for both OSs?
I've got multiple computers with multiple OSs, and they each have their use.
OSX on the macbook, and I think it's a superior OS for being on the go and for development.
XP Pro on one desktop and I think it's great for personal/home office stuff.
XP Home on another desktop and I think it's fine for email, web browsing, etc.

You can always dualboot Vista/Leopard on Macs

All of my business computers have Window's, my personal computer is a macbook and I get pissed off using window's at work at least once an hour. I never thought I would be so happy using a computer as I am with my macbook, for me its damn near perfect.

This pretty much sums up my sentiments as well. Every time I turn it on, my MBP is quite simply a pleasure to use. On the other hand, running Windows now feels like taking a dump in a public restroom. Sure it works, but why would you use it if you can possibly avoid it?
