New TV suggestions?

Hey guys, I probably should have posted this in a TV forum, but seeing that we share the same great taste in cars , I figure I might get better opinions here.

Well I'm looking for a new TV that is between 42" and 50". I'm still torn between whether to get a LCD or a Plasma. The TV is going to mainly be used for watching movies. I would also like to be able to hook up a game console or my computer for gaming purposes from time to time. The TV will be mounted to the wall.

Also I would like it to be HD capable along with specs that ensure it won't be left in the dust when next year rolls around.

My budget is below $4000, if you guys can point me in the right direction and give me certain brands or models to look into, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Happy bunny day!

I would head down to Circuit City & Video Only and shop. FInd the one you like, research on the Net and shop on the Net. Once you get the price, head back to local shop and ask them to price match. Sometimes, they will not price match but if you are nice about it, you will pay a bit more but negotiate for free extended warranty...

That is what I did and I wound up with a great price and 5 year warranty. But mine is a rear projection HDTV.

Yeah, but the problem is that it is overwhelming with the amount of stuff they have at stores. I don't even know where to start. If ya'll could give me a couple models to look into that would be great.

Thanks for your help guys

I have a 50 inch Panny plasma and love it. I'd highly recommend it save for your one comment about wanting it for gaming. I know that the newer plasmas are much better about burn-in but I'd still be cognizant of that issue. My plasma is 1.5 years old and still looks beautiful, but I don't play games on it.
Tell me more about your room. Is there a lot of light? Post pictures if you can.
Thanks!

I love plasma but if you really want to play games you should consider some other technology. I would avoid plasmas greater than 42" if you decide that you really want a plasma and want to play games. It seems that 50"+ panels are more prone to image retention than the smaller ones. Even with a 42" you will need to be really careful playing games on it.

I would not recommend any plasma for gaming.

Yeah I've read about the burn in thing too. What if I were just to hook up my computer to the TV and not play games, but to just play divx files, would that cause any problems?

The room I'm putting it in is about 16' by 10' carpeted. There's nothing in it now except for a couch.

I guess I will forget about playing games on it. (Not that big of a gammer anyways, just thought it would be nice to have the option) So which plasma TV is best?

Brands of good plasmas range from Fujitsu (excellent) and Pioneer Elite to others. These two brands cost $$$ while there are others that are also nearly as good at a much better price.

When I was looking, it was between a Panasonic and a Pioneer. I got the Panny and a neighbor of mine got a Pioneer. Both look great and both of us are thrilled at our choices.

I am not as familiar with other brands- I know that LG, Samsung, Hitachi, and others make panels now. I can't speak to their quality or pricing. Many brands are now merely a derivative of another panel. Again, I would strongly suggest that you spend a night on the plasma forum at AVS Forum and get some good information. If I were buying now, I'd check AVS with a heavy bias towards another Panasonic panel. I will also personally recommend buying your panel from a place in Ohio- www.visualapex.com Excellent pricing and top-notch customer service. Candace was my rep. and she was fantastic.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions. It sounds like you want to get a plasma- I've been very happy with mine. Some other neighbors of mine have LCD's and I have not been as impressed with their sets-then again, that could because of set-up or signal and not necessarily b/c of the technology.

Good luck
