New take on in-wall speakers

Anyone ever seen someone mount their surrounds in an opening in the wall.

Basically what I'd do is build a box into the wall (best example I could find below).

I would make an alcove the same size as the speaker and finish the outside with some picture frame moulding. Maybe even make a custom grill to fix over the opening. Basically it would be an in-wall speaker but removable. Probably insulate around the box in the wall to improve the sound.

This would be for all four surrounds + the center channel

Thoughts?

That would be pretty cool. It would allow you to take the speakers out without leaving a permamnent hole in the wall and you dont necessarily have to use "in-wall" speakers. Good idea

Yeah haven't found a reasonably priced set of in-wall speakers that sound good.

My only question is acoustics.
I'm planning to push the speaker out as far as it will go (flush with the sheetrock).

Will probably line the alcove with this stuff

Going to cover the opening with a grill like this.

Nice!

When I did my in-wall speakers, I found that the backing and the volume of air (i.e. acoustics were perfect for the speakers I had).

Anyone else think this will work? Acoustics is the only issue I'm worried about.

I would contact 2001AudiS4 to ask him what volume and material to place behind the speakers. There is a certain equation that you can use to calculate that volume, but I'm not sure what it is now. It depends on the speaker size and other factors.

I would think you would want option #1.

Thanks but the issue is these are already enclosed. They're the satellite speakers. I'm just curious (before I start cutting out sheetrock) what effect they will have if I recess them in the wall.

Can't seem to find much on the web.

If they are sealed boxes (no port) they will probably be okay.

I've thought of doing this, too. The only issue is if the speakers are ported, particularly rear ported. I don't believe the RC-Micro's are ported at all, though, so you should be fine (assuming you're still getting the Micro's).

yeah I got them and no they are not ported. I figured it would work. Maybe someone has pics. If not, I guess I'll be the first to post.

I see no reason why this wouldn't work because like you said they are sealed. I have always wanted to sink my into the wall too because they are kinda ugly, especially the rear channels.

Hurry up and get pics
