My Home Theater Is Acting Up

Ok guys bare with me here. I bought an Onkyo all in one home theater back in May. In June i noticed my subwoofer was sounding strange. It wouldn't put out a hard thump, instead it was making a hum noise that was distorted and rumbled (mostly noticeable at low volume). I took in for service and they could not find anything wrong with it. So i got it back and it worked fine. Now recently it has been making that distorted rumble noise again. I have been researching online but all I could find was issues with loop grounding. But I don't think thats the case. It seems to me that the receiver is sending feedback to the sub or its getting interference from something. I only have my television, dvd player and headphone jack for my ipod hooked up to it using RCA cables. Could the subwoofer cable be bad also? It doesn't sound like the sub is blown. Im confused guys. Any suggestions?

Well, did you try another cable just to test it?

Hum is usually a ground problem. One thing to check would be your outlets. You can get a tool for around $10 at HD that will tell you if your outlets are wired correctly.

I have something like this...

Also, do you have a digital tv (i.e. LCD or Plasma)? If so, do you notice a hum bar that slowly scrolls up or down the screen? It would be a faint line that you sometimes can barely see, or sometimes is quite clear and visible. They are typically the product of a bad ground as well.

This might help. Could there be a grounding issue if my unit is currently plugged into a power strip?

2001AudiS4: No i dont have a digital tv and i dont notice anything different if the tv is on.

Thanks guys so far for the suggestions, keep em coming? Im still have this issue.

Does anyone think a new Monster subwoofer cable will do the trick?

Absolutely not. Monster cables are marked up 23450 to the 20th power. Just grab yourself a normal RCA cable and plug it in to test. See if you are still getting the hum.

thats funny, didnt realize i made that mistake until you pointed that out. I guess i wasnt taking my time when i was typing.

Anyways, my cousin has a similar Onkyo home theater at his house. I will see if he has time for me to bring my sub over and hook it up to his. This way i will know if its the cable or not without having to buy a new one yet.

JUST TRY ANOTHER RCA CABLE. What's the point of asking advice if you do not follow it?

Ok, I just went and got another cable, and its still doing the same thing. To describe the noise more, the sub sounds like its suffocating.
