Question MAC vs. ALL-IN-ONE PC?

I'm in the market. I'm leaning toward a MAC ( iMAC ). It's either this or an ALL-IN-ONE PC. I am not familiar with Vista. I know many loathe it. Windows 7 is coming in the fall. I hear it is much better.

So, speak, or forever hold you peace!!!

Personally Vista annoys the hell out of me. My main complaint is the constant popup windows asking you if you are sure you want to do something. I could see if it was requiring a password or something but all you do is hit ok and it continues. Its only purpose I can see is to annoy the user. Ive also heard that windows 7 is having its share of problems and who knows if they will be taken care of before its release.

I honestly can't comment on the MAC because I have never used one.

The constant popup windows can be easily fixed. Google for "UAC" + "Vista" there are easy guides on how to do it.

Windows 7 is rock solid, i've been running the Beta since day 1 without ANY issues. Nearly all of my software works perfectly.

You can always dual boot your Mac and/or run Windows under VMware Fusion or Parallels. You have the best of both worlds. :-)

It's what I do. I really like it.

(I'm a Network Admin for a school district that runs an almost 50/50 mixture of Windows and Mac workstations and servers...so I'm pretty impartial when it comes to this stuff. I like both! lol).

Absolutely! And this is what I have in mind. I just want to hear pros and cons that are out there before I lay down a chuck of change on a iMac. I think they are worth it from what I hear. My son has a MacBook and loves it.

Thanks man..

I'd recommend buying some sort of extended warranty (like AppleCare). You may not need it, but it's good insurance for the times when hardware failures to come up. I've had nothing but good experiences with Apple when getting computers repaired under warranty. Pretty painless.

I can't think of any deal breaker cons in terms of buying a Mac. Since you can natively run Windows via Boot Camp, you can't miss out on much "Windows only" stuff. I think the biggest con is the price.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong buying a Mac these days. If you've got the money, it's the best way to go IMHO.

I'm trying to decide on a new mini or an iMac. They both seem to support dual monitor now.

to sarlacc, Apple supports gay marriage and gave $$ in opposition to Amendment 8 so think if you want to give your money to a company like that. My dad is a huge mac fan but also a huge right wing christian conservative, when he learned Apple was supporting gay marriage Holy shit did he flip out! He's seriously thinking of switching to PC just because of the gay marriage thing. That's how strongly he's against gay marriage, which he has the right to be. Personally I don't care either way but if you follow the Bible as closely as he does (and you do Caddy) you might want to think about that.

does the new mini support dual monitors or does it just have a choice of mini dvi and mini display port? It might be one or the other.

Mac mini even lets you connect up to two displays, including your TV, with the mini-DVI port and Mini DisplayPort.

If you're literally only willing to consider all-in-one Windows machines, then I would definitely choose the iMac.

what i tell most people that ask me is that mac is mostly for people who arent tech savy, and want to do basic stuff like internet surfing/email/ uploading pics and stuff like that. they don't have to worry about getting a virus with a mac.
but for everyone else, a pc shouldn't be a problem if you actually use programs that aren't your basic word processor/internet ect ect and its cheaper.

I'm not particularly computer literate, i.e. "plug & pray" was developed for people like me , but have both Vista and XP laptops.

The only complaints about my Vista laptop are that it uses lots of RAM compared to the XP machine, and it will not run many older programs designed for Win 98, Win 95, etc. while the XP machine will run those programs without a hiccup. Oh, and I have one printer that 4 years old, but no Vista driver has been developed for it.
The Vista machine does seem more stable than the XP machine.

If you're using this for home, then I would recommend an iMac. Apple just "refreshed" their line-up so better bang for the buck now. You don't have to worry much at all about viruses and, if you're into photography and video, an iMac is great.

I can't think of any all-in-one PC that I'd want over an iMac.

Dell Studio Hybrid and a 22" LCD would be a decent alternative with a small footprint.

http://www.dell.com/hybrid

Samsung is about to release a new 23" LED-backlit monitor for $399 (retail)- P2370L.

You have options.

have you used one? they suck IMO. The finish on the screen is crap for draging things around, it has trouble recognizing touches/double clicks etc. HP's panels need to come along way before the tech is of any use.

Does anyone have a 24" monitor at home (either iMac or just regular screen) is it too big?

I have the 24" iMac and I love it. Not too big in my opinion, just make sure you have the space for it before you buy it. I had to go out and buy a new desk to accomodate for mine.

I was wondering the same thing. I think I would like the 24. My wife thinks it will overwhelm the nice piece of furniture that I house the PC in.

In my opinion, with screens being wide screen now, 22" is perfect, 24" is better. This way, you still get the height of a 19" 4x3 (or a smidge more ). Who knew that damn Pythagoras and his theorem would come in handy in real life?

I looked at these HPs. I like the TV portion. I have a TV Card in my pc now. I think Apple has a piece of software that allows you to get the TV. The rumor is that Mac may be coming out at the end of this month with a New iMac, but those rumors have been floating around since late last summer. I'll hang on till April before I decide however....
