Under 50" LCD is king. Over 50" you want to consider a plasma, although they run a bit hotter and take more electricity.

Samsung, Sony and Sharp are the front-runners in HD right now. You can't really go wrong with any of them.

I see you linked a DLP projection TV. This is the way to go if you want to save money to eventually upgrade. A buddy of mine just got a DLP and is very happy with it.

Amazon has it for $1319 free shipping. Their delivery service will set it up and make sure it works before leaving if you want. I have a 3 year old 46" DLP. The newer generation has fewer moving parts (no color wheel) and a better light engine and it's slimmer. A good choice for 50".

How far are you going to be sitting from the TV? What are the lighting conditions like?

I have the old 42" Samsung plasma and love it. I did get it for $719 though marked down from $1199. It was off the shelf and had just been checked by a Samsung rep, so I got a 5 year warranty with it for $150 more just in case. Came to $930 after taxes, saved almost $500 with the whole deal. The store made 0 gross profit on it ( I saw when they rang it up because the high up manager had to override the message)

If you watch mostly at night, plasma will be your best bet. LCD shines when the lighting conditions are difficult to control. Plasma has much deeper blacks, which leads to better contrast, colors and shadow detail. With the size you're considering and at your viewing distance, 1080p will not benefit you, so you can save yourself some money and consider the non-1080p plasmas.

If you're going to big-box stores to compare sets, be sure to ask for the remote and fiddle with the settings. The stores set the displays way too bright. Although it may seem impressive to see all those bright displays, not be fooled.

My eyes are always drawn to a plasma over any other TV....you have to go and see them in person!

Excellent choice. the 4661 and 4665 are both top of the line LCDs, and yes that is a pretty good price. I got the 4665F for $1800 a couple weeks ago.

Watch for HDMI drop outs or green flashes. If it happens you need to get your motherboard replaced by Samsung. They will send out a tech to do it for free. Read the LNT thread on AVSFORUM for more info.

Is that $1990 before taxes? Where is their Chicago store? I hear they are sometimes willing to negotiate. That's a great set, you'll love it.

Well I know the guy there, he says he gave it to be for $10 over cost. So not sure if thats true or if hes willing to it for anyone else. But they for sure negotiate on everything.

Oh and that was before taxes. Total with tax was $2301.90

Includes shipping and install, plus two HDMI cables. Main reason i wanted them to do it is since my old TV is 200lbs, i rather have them move it than me.

Its coming today Also bought a PS3 from Frys, they were offering a 7 blu-ray deal. http://shop3.outpost.com/%7BZ-imkavu...roduct/5332048

Well that was a tough call. I like Xbox games more but I hear blu-ray is leading over HD-DVD.

So since i watch more movies than play games, i went with the PS3

My question is: does the PS3 have an optical out cable and HDMI cable for 1080P movies? What is the difference between a PS3 and a Blu-ray player?

Yes the PS3 has HDMI and optical out, its how i have it hooked up.

From what others have said, theres no real difference between a PS3 and a standalone blu-ray player. Which is why i went with the PS3 for almost the same price as the standalone version.

Exactly why I got the PS3. I want to be able to game and watch high def movies. A steal for $499.

That's how I have mine connected as well. At this point, the PS3 is one of the most advanced Blu-ray players out there. It's HDMI 1.3 compliant, supports Deep Color and can upconvert. The fact that it's reliant on firmware rather than hardware also allows for further improvement.

There isn't much upside to having a standalone player. The only cons of a PS3 I've found are:

1. It does get hot and some people have reported a noisy fan that can be distracting when watching moves.
2. It's a power hog.
3. Since it's more like a computer than a DVD player, it has a shutdown cycle.

But after looking at the whole picture, unless standalone players drop in price to $or $299 or $399, I don't see any reason not to get a PS3.
