Looking for a Blu-ray player

Just got a 40" LCD 1080p tv and found out that I don't have an hdmi hookup on my current DVD player so I am looking for a bluray player.

Any recommendations on a good but "cheap" one? Aka don't want to go above $150.

Also, I had a question about this 'upconversion' thing. What exactly is it and can all bluray players upconvert regular DVDs?

Don't have any specific recommendations for players.

The upconversion thing is when the source material (in this case the DVD) is at a lower resolution and the (blu-ray) player interpolates the resolution to make the resolution higher. In most cases you are going from 480p to 1080i or 1080p, depending on the player. Most blu-ray players will upconvert, but some will do better than others.

Best Buy has several on sale for $149.99. Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba. Hard to go wrong with any of those.

Is there any advantage to buying the same brand as the TV is? Say... Samsung bluray player and Samsung tv?

I have the previous version of that Sony and it has been a good player. That one should be even better.

Not sure if Samsung does this, but if I turn on my Sony bluray player, it will automatically turn on the Sony TV. There are probably some other features, but that's all I've noticed so far.

This thread just reminded me that I'm still owed another blu-ray player that was supposed to come with one of the TVs.

I was at Best buy this morning and they had a Samsung BD-P1600 for $149.99. I thought it was a decent deal and actually almost jumped on it.

It's wifi ready (needs an adapter) and you can stream pandora, netflix, blockbuster, youtube, etc. straight to the DVD player with great quality.

I'm still debating. Between my $50 Gift card and my $75 in-store credit, it could be a very cheap addition to my Sammy

Link to Samsung

I bought a Logitech Harmony 890 and it takes care of all the components. I strongly recommend this remote if you have a lot of components. Also has RF so you can hide your components and set up sensors around the room. If the house is set up right, you could easily have just the TV hung on the wall and all components behind it in a different room. (My wish for my next place)

Looks like the 1600 can be had for $129 and you get a $20 Best Buy gift card! Im going to get my sister one for Christmas and then use the gift card to get one for myself.

I ended up picking this up on Sunday and hooked it up to my Samsung LN46A750. I'm in love with this player. I ended up getting a Netflix account Sunday night and should be getting a movie in the mail today. They charge an extra $2 for blu-ray but I think it's worth it.

What HiFi rated the Sony BDP-S360 as the best buy in the "under $300" category. You can find it for less than $150 and for around $128 locally in SoCal (Howards). I have the Panny DMP-BD35 (the predecessor to the BD60) which is just fine. I bought it about a year ago from Costco for $199 and have no complaints. Plays all the Blu rays I get from Netflix and sound damn good doing it.

What makes the OPPO better than the cheaper player?

Same thing that makes a Lexus ES350 better than a Toyota Avalon?

All hype aside, it does a mind blowing job of up-scaling standard DVDs!

Now if you will excuse me, I have to go order my Surefire flashlight.

So I bought a Samsung 1600, got the wifi dongle and couldn't get it connected to my network. I researched online and this seemed like a very common issue so I returned both items and picked out a new dvd player.

I decided to spend an extra $100 and got the Sony BDPN460. I like the DVD player itself much more than the Samsung, I think it works smoother but I found out a few days later that it ALSO needs a $100 adapter to hook up to my network. I am going to be taking it back..

So now I am stuck with $236 instore credit to BB and can't find a decent WIFI ABLE Blu-ray player.

Any suggestions? I'd rather not fork out another $120 for a PS3 since I wouldn't really play it and it won't sync up to my Logitech 890 w/out a $55 adapter.

Returned the Sony and got the Samsung 3600. Hooked it up with my network, DVD player is awesome. Couldn't be happier. It comes with the wireless adapter included.

I'm going to jump in on this. I need to use a store CC I have or they are going to cancel it. I was looking a a Panasonic player. It's $100. Any good? New to blu ray, I don't need any fancy thing, says it up-converts older dvd's. It's 1080p & has 1 hdmi output. Which is fine for me since my TV has 1. It's model DMPBD60.

I just got a $50 amazon gift card so was thinking of getting the Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray Disc Player...

Actually I want a pair of Oakley Half Jackets but can't find them on Amazon so am leaning towards this player.

I sold some stuff on ebay including my ps2 to upgrade to a ps3. Since I wanted to check out the other features anyway I thought it would be a waste of money to spend 100 plus on a standalone bluray player. I can't comment on other's but the PS3 with the remote is absolutely amazing picture.

That's the one I just bought about 2 weeks ago from Best Buy. They had it on sale.

Seems like a decent player so far.
Only complaint I have is that the remote kind of sucks balls. And apparently they don't have remote codes for it to program into another remote?? Other than that, it's been a good player.

What's the difference for the $50? Only one's wifi ready and the other wifi built in?

^That's what it looks like to me. If you what the built in wireless spend the extra $50.

That's cool that they can play pandora.

No mention on if it's Wireless G or N.

Yeah I think it's just the built-in wifi difference, but I'll have it right next to a router so it can just plug in using the ethernet port. My Dad has a friend who has one and he showed it off at a party.. Hopefully they create a Hulu widget so I can join Hulu
