Just bought a Samsung LCD TV any tips?
I couldn't resist the deal circuit city had on a 40 inch Samsung series 6 lcd tv so I just bought my first flat screen tv. I'm just curious if there are any special settings/contrast/brightness/etc.. things I should know that I should do right from the start for the best picture.

and last but not least... a decent 5.1 system (depending on the size of your room and budget)

Don't know how familiar you are with lcd, hdtv etc. But if you get an hdmi cable don't pay too much. I got mine for 9.99. You can get even cheaper ones from monoprice.com HDMI cables are pretty much all the same.
Look into OTA - over the air HDTV. I just made a cheap antenna out of a stripped regular tv cable. Looped around and pointed it towards a major antenna in my city. I get 7 free HD channels.
I just got myself the samsung ln40a530. So our settings/options maybe be different a bit. But look for audio settings to.

I disagree, NOT all HDMI cables are the same... I have a Sammy 1080p LCD, and had issues of the picture going blank with a cheaper HDMI cable, I went with a better one and problem solved... I believe someone else here had the same problem... I'm NOT saying you haveb run out and buy the very high end stuff... but I believe even monoprice has different grades of HDMI cables... I'd go with the better ones...

Oh, and anyone who pays for Monster Cables let me know. I have a really super awesome best ever set of rabbit ears that will give you HD quality for the low reasonable price of $499. WAY cheaper than 5 years of HD cable... I take Paypal.

..no offense but that calibration thing is complete crap. I used it on my 32" and it actually made the viewing picture worse to me. I guess its different for everyone.. b/c a buddy of mine swears by the auto-calibration crap. The main thing you need to know is Contrast UP Brightness DOWN ..and from there, you can adjust the color temp, sharpness, etc.

How do I get DTV or HDTV programming?
In order to receive over-the-air digital programming (as opposed to digital programming provided by a paid provider such as cable or satellite TV service), you will need: (1) a DTV (a TV with a digital tuner) or an analog TV connected to a digital-to-analog converter box and (2) a broadcast antenna (either a rooftop antenna or “rabbit ears” connected to your set). In general, an antenna that provides quality reception of over-the-air analog TV broadcasting will work for digital TV broadcasting.

It's a quadrature amplitude modulated digital signal -- just like your digital cable TV, cable modem signal, and in the near future all of your over-the-air TV (DTV).

avs forums is the only way to go for calibration. I just did my LN46A750 and it's amazing. I'm ordering HDMI cables tonight from monoprice and ordering live for call of duty. I hope we get snowed in for a couple of weeks.

Calibrating LCD's is completely subjective as to getting the "best" picture. The factory brightness settings are only good if you watch TV in the same room with a supernova. Otherwise it washes out the picture. So turn it down and jack up the contrast and sharpness.
