HELP - HD Box / TV connection

I thought i was electronically savvy until yesterday...i cannot for the life of me get my HD box to work with a new LCD.

Cable box is TimeWarner Scientific Atlantic 8300HD.
TV is 32" Sharp 720P LCD.

I already have all the colored cables, and would truly prefer not to deal with buying HDMI cables, regardless of quality diff.

i have tried all combinations for connecting the cables...could get sound working but no picture.

ANY ADVICE IS HELPFUL. (spent 2 hours working on this. and REFUSE to deal with NYC TimeWarner service, as any NYers may know).

THANKS GUYS!

P.S. the box should work, as it used to be hooked up to my roomates 1080i.

Any sound? You have your component (colored) cables going from the HDbox to the TV and have the TV tuned to the component input, and you get a black screen with no sound?

i DO get sound, but no image. well there is an image, but its split up into thirds, is black and white, and is fuzzy. (if that counts)

its not the TV, it works fine when hooked up to the same box with a coaxial. and its not the colored cord, bc i have tried many multiple ones.

^^ Can't help you if you cant access the settings menu on your box.

Call your cable company.

Hook up your tv with coax cable and try to change the settings of your box to component output like Moog said. Otherwise, you'll have to call the catv company.

^^^great idea.

i think the problem is that the box is set to 1080, per the previous TV setup

(current tv is a 720)

In the meantime, purchase a HDMI cable and spend the $10-$15..

Go to this website http://www.scientificatlanta.com/pro...orer8300hd.htm and choose 'Explorer HDTV Setup Wizard' pdf. It explains how to set up the correct resolution on your model cable box to match your tv.

Press the info and guide button at the same time on the box, while the box is off. This will take you into the setup wizard. You should then press a series of buttons as it asks you a few questions. If memory serves correctly, the series is B, A, B, B, A (I might be off and this is with a SA box programmed for Cablevision, but i believe the Wizard should be the same). I am surprised that your tv does not correctly upconvert/downconvert the resolution. I typically see a pinkish screen when the box is setup for Standard Def until you run the wizard, not a black and white with the picture breaking up.

For the newer boxes you can just hit guide while the cable box is powered off and that'll bring you into the setup menu.

I'm curious how you got around this issue (if that was the problem) without being able to access the wizard?

seriously, it was a trail and error of the order of the procedure between turning on what component first / plugging in cables / changing TV input.

again, somehow the right order worked...no wizard necessary. of course, i wouldnt recommend this...
