DLP vs. LCD

Im going to shop for a new TV tonight. Nothin crazy, somewhere between a 32"-37". im researching and ive found a common problem with a dlp is the "rainbow effect" and a common problem with an lcd is "the screen door effect". i read up about these but im still clueless. any other problems that these tv's have? which direction should i go?? thanks

If you're using it for "Gaming" I believe DLP is the safest bet..

I have a DLP and I love it. The rainbow effect I notice is when I'll move my eyes or head quickly from one part of the screen to another. It's very brief and doesn't bother me that much. Honestly, I never noticed it until a friend came over and mentioned it.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both. I suggest just going to a store & looking for yourself.

If you are happy with 34" . . .

and have the space, this has great picture quality.

At that screen size I would go for a flat panel LCD.

Those "problems" don't affect everyone. For example, I've never seen the rainbow effect on my DLP, however, the screen door effect bugged the shit out of me so bad that I borrowed my neighbor's mini-van to return my 60" Sony LCD last November.

So go to the store and let your eyes be the judge. I'm partial to DLP, however, you may like LCD better. Oh and BTW, try to find a real TV store, not a Best Buy or Circuit City. Those guys mess with the colors to try to move certain TVs over others. Generally a real electronic store have all of the TV's tuned properly, so you can get a better idea of how it should look.

Both the actual manufacturers and industry folks highly recommend against playing video games on a plasma... so if you want to try it... you're doing so at your own risk.

Feel free to search this sub-forum as this topic has come up several times.

I assume you mean they highly discourage the use of games on their sets.

For gaming, it's a safe bet on either format. Neither TV is susceptible to burn-in. Keep in mind that there is no perfect tv format out there. You have to do your home work and find out what best suits you and your viewing area.

The way I did it was I did all of my research online, then went to two higher end electronic stores (Tweeter, etc and a local one called Zobo). After I did all of my research I went in to Best Buy to purchase the item and that's it. Quick in and out...

That is pretty much how I make all my big purchases. Online product research; then price research; then I make my purchase.

That is the way to go. Best Buy employees don't know jack and Circuit City employees think they know jack but are really no more informed than BB employees.

The modern plasmas are very safe against burn in. It can happen, but its unlikely. And keep in mind your old CRT will burn in as well. Its just not a good idea to leave games paused on any TV.

Also, with regards to longevity, the new plasmas are rated at about 60,000 hours. (time it takes to go to half brightness). This is actualy alot longer than CRT's. At 6 hours of TV a day the TV will last over 27 years.

Plasmas got a bad wrap b/c the first releases had issues... and now people still associate those issues with modern day plasmas when in reality, they'll last as long, or longer then the other technologies...

That's the myth... however, as mentioned above a few times (and elsewhere in the subforum), not true...

I would stay away from plasma if you're using it for gaming.

If you're going LCD check out Samsung and Sony.

DLP I'd only look into Samsung. You should be able to get a good deal on the 720p models. 42" probably cost around $1500... maybe even less by now.

But it would be a tough choice between the 50" and 42"

The price difference from Best Buy to Amazon on the 42" isn't much but the 50" would be $200++ after taxes. But the 42" is only around $100 difference..

If you're buying from Best Buy I'd buy the 42"..

My neighbor has the highest end Mistu DLP (think it's the Diamond line) and the picture is meh. Not impressed at all with the Mistubishi DLPs, and he's had problems on and off with it losing configurations and so on. I haven't seen their 1080p sets, but their other stuff is not impressive at all.

LOL, I have a Sceptre 15" LCD in my kitchen. They're well known in the computer monitor sector and get good reviews, but they're kind of new to the TV market. I actually got mine about 3 years ago. It wasn't even sold as a TV back then... sold as an LCD computer monitor with a built-in TV tuner. I've never used it as a monitor... TV only. So far, so good.
