Dad bought a DLP - Can't find much info on web
Got a call last night that my dad had gone and purchased a new tv. It's a Magnavox 50" DLP, model 50ML8105D/17. I haven't seen it yet and decided to search on the web for reviews or information and can't find much. The Magnavox website doesn't even list the thing. AVSForums doesn't have anything either.
I haven't done a whole lot of research on DLPs and am not sure about the specs on this one. Here they are:
# Picture Display: 50”DLP™ HDTV with HD4 Light Engine
# High definition DLP™ HD4, resolution 1280 x 720p
# PIP for watching 2 programs at the same time
# Progressive Scan for razor-sharp and flicker free images
# 3D comb filter separates colors for a crisp image
Sound:
# Incredible Surround™ sound
Convenience:
# Plug and play for easier installation
# Smart Picture and Smart Sound provide optimized settings
# One touch convenience
Tuner, Reception, Transmission:
# Integrated Digital TV Tuner to receive and watch
Connectivity:
# Highest quality HDMI connectivity, compatible with DVI-D
# 2x component video (YPBPR) input for high quality reproduction
# D-Sub/VGA PC connectivity
Dimensions and Weight:
# Dimensions: 14.8" L x 45.9" W x 35.5" H
# Weight: 114 lbs.
Thoughts?

I am considering getting a DLP too. From what I heard DLP's are good because they are not as suseptible to burn in's as Plasma's are. The only draw back for some people is that you can't hang them on the wall. Not really a big problem for me anyway.
Actually DLP is my only choice because I am going to be playing consoles on it a lot and I have heard from many people that consoles are not recommended on Plasma's
I think those specs are pretty much in line with what DLP's are but I'm sure others on this board know a lot more about DLP's than I do.

Seems like a standard 720p DLP. I do not have much experience with the Magnavox DLP's. To be completely 100% honest, I didn't even know they made DLPs. Samsung is the DLP leader, but I have also done research on Toshiba which also gets decent reviews. DLPs are a good technology, and personally, I prefer them over LCD.
I have a Sammy 50" DLP and I love it. So much so that once the new DLPs come down in price and the new technology works out the kinks (1080p and LED light engine) I'll probably get another one and move the 50" to the bonus room....
And yes, DLPs are OK for console gaming. I have my PS2 hooked up to it and have never had a problem...

DLP's are great televisions. Basically the technology is different. You are going to get brighter whites and darker blacks, but there is only one drawback I see, and it really depends on the viewer is the "rainbow" effect because the DLP uses a color wheel to make the image. Although it's been improved, some people still see it if they are anal enough lol.
