Cheapo LCD sh!t itself, what 40-46" to get?
on Friday night my cheapo 32" LCD crapped itself... it was a hand me down so i'm not too upset... and reading online, the power supply was a known issue for those models...
This weekend I went to Costco, Target and Sears to have a look at new TVs... out of all the models we looked at (Vizio, Pana, Sharp, Toshiba, Sony and Sammy) it seems like Sammy has the best picture...
so far the best deal i found was a 46" Sammy 1080p, 40k contrast but 60hz refresh... $800
any other deals out there you guys know of? should i wait till after xmas? it isn't urgent as we are using an old tube tv for now, but def will need a replacement in a couple months...

Is this a primary set for the living room or something you use less often?
I can't speak for the Sammys (I'm sure they're great), but we are very happy with our 46" Sony (KDL-46W5100). They aren't easy to find now after Best Buy bundled them with PS3s, but you should be able to get one for <$1000.
This would make a great primary set, but might be more TV than necessary for a less used set.

Don't try to judge picture quality in the store. The default settings are extremely overdone to make the tv stand out in a brightly lit store and get your attention. It's the equivalent to TYPING IN ALL CAPS on the internet. It has nothing to do with "quality" or "accuracy."
Try cnet for reviews and information.

you mean the tv's configurations?
you can try going to avs forums and searching for a thread devoted to your tv.
lots of folks there will post their "ideal" configurations.
or do you mean setting it up? like mounting, etc?

Check slickdeals.net daily.
I have a Samsung LN46A750 - Love the TV, it's my primary tv in my living room, I've had it for a year and am still in awe sometimes at some shows.
I have a Sony Bravia 46S5100 in my basement that I mainly just play xbox/watch movies on once every 2 weeks or so - also a great TV, I'm very happy with the picture and I picked that up for about $843 shipped about a month and a half ago from DELL from a deal I saw on Slickdeals.
The Sammy is 120hz, the Sony is 60. I personally can't tell a difference, which is why I bought a Sony a year later with worse specs....it's not worth the price increase for me.

After watching a few minutes of "Up" blu-ray on my Sony 52W5100, I can strongly recommend this series. I haven't even changed any setting yet at it looks great. Watched a little SD and HD feeds through Verizon FiOS and the SD was passable and the HD was pretty nice. Blu-ray shines.
I'll throw "Up" (the movie) on the 46W5100 tonight and report if there are any issues.

If you're looking at Sony...for your reference...the models are as follows from worst to best (example, 46W5100).
L, S, V, W, Z, XBR.
I'd stay with W or higher...though V isn't that bad, and if you're not really a TV/movie person, it'll be enough. I'm sure you could find a good W series, as stated above for under $1,000.

The Z and XBR are 10-bit panels
XBR is, obviously, the top of the line.
I have a 40" Z4100 and the picture is magnificent. I'm using calibration settings I found on AVSForums. The only drawback is the auto contrast feature, it can't be turned off and you sometimes can see it make the adjustment.

Lack of contrast adjustment is kind of annoying, but the images on my W series are pretty darn nice.

I can't remember what model I have...but I have a 46 inch Sharp Aquos LCD from Costco and I love it. It's got a 10 bit panel, 120hz refresh rate (though I think I have it disabled), and after tweaking the picture settings it looks great. It was $999 when I bought it a few months ago (so maybe it or something similar is cheaper now). I hardly hear people talk about 'em...I don't know if it's a brand thing or what, but I really like my set.
Gah! I wish I could remember the model!
EDIT: Aha! Toy Thread FTW...LC-C4677UN

Yeah, the '09 and '10 Z and XBR models are 240hz. The Z and the XBR are 10 bit panels vs the 8 bit panels in the rest of their lineup. And the key difference between the Z and the XBR is the audio. The XBR has a separate built in woofer and the 2 stereo speakers are vastly improved. Not sure about the W series, but the Z and the XBR also share the XMB interface with the PS3 and PSP and are very user friendly. They also have some network media functionality (playing music and viewing photos off of a remote pc for example). And they have the improved TV guide for those of you who don't want to use a cable box.
I know it did on mine, so I disabled it.

Hmm, hadn't read that before. Thanks, I'll have to look into that. The set they referenced in the article is an XBR6, same series as mine so I'm sure its doing the same thing. Only thing they didn't mention is how its receiving the updates. I have a cable going to mine (in addition to the cable DVR) as well as an ethernet connection. From what I understand, if the TV has internet access, it should be pulling updates that way. That's an active process vs waiting for the local PBS station to do its updates.
