Cable length
Cable length
I am getting a new cable for my subwoofer - since I had to relocate it in the new house. The current one is now too short.
Does it degrade the sound or anything if I buy it a little longer than needed - or should I get the length that is as close to exact fit as possible? It comes in an 18ft and 24ft length. The width of the room is 15ft + the distance from the floor up to back of the receiver (3ft?) - kinda close with an 18ft I think. Any harm going with the 24ft?
Also, Is it bad to have the sub near the sofa instead of up near the front by the TV? I thought I read it was supposed to be near the TV (front of room). I just do not have the space to do that.
Thanks!

An extra 6 feet will have no effect. I doubt an extra 60 feet would have any effect on low frequencies. As for the sub, bass is pretty much omni-directional. You would probably feel it vibrating your couch before you would "hear" that it's by your couch.
I was under the impression the only problem you have with different cord lenghts is that it takes each speaker is getting the signal at different times. But how significant that is when you are talking a couple feet I don't know.
I might be way off on that though

Thanks guys.

Strictly speaking, you want to limit cable lengths, and also match left and right lengths, etc.
But realistically, if you can notice a diff in sound due to an extra 6 feet of cable, you've got one hell of a set of ears.

You don't want to coil speaker wire because you'll introduce inductance into the circuit.
