Yes. It was the last Sony XBRs that were tubes. They were 32" widescreen CRT television capable of 1080i. They are a couple years old. I believe there a couple non-XBR models as well.

Sony also made some 4:3 HDTV televisions, and some other companies such as Toshiba and Mitsu might have as well.

And Samsung made a widescreen HDTV Tube.

Apple’s new Hollywood deal: Death of the DVD?

Apple’s new Hollywood deal: Death of the DVD?

The news that Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes let slip in a conference call on Wednesday — that from now on Warner Bros. movies would come out as video on demand the same day as the DVD — turns out to be bigger than he let on.

Apple on Thursday announced that not only would Warner Bros. titles be available for purchase on the iTunes store the same day and date as DVD release, but so too would movies from 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Studios (DIS), Paramount Pictures (VIA), Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SNE), Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios. (press release)

Even before the full extent of the deal was revealed, analysts were talking about the consequences for the DVD business. “Time Warner To Help Kill Off DVD Rentals” was the headline of Michael Learmonth’s piece in Silicon Alley Insider Thursday morning.

What does all this mean? It means Time Warner is finally ready to start weaning itself from DVD sales, which have been Hollywood’s biggest revenue source for years.

It also means that if Blockbuster — or Netflix, for that matter — doesn’t figure out electronic delivery, it is toast. And it means that Sony and Toshiba just incinerated a pile of money in a useless DVD format war.

What convinced the Hollywood studios to cut this deal with Apple’s (AAPL) Steve Jobs? According to Time Warner’s (TWX) Bewkes, the company had been experimenting with “day and date” video on demand (VOD) release for several months and found that DVD rentals only fell by 3 to 5 percent and sales of DVDs actually increased. Since VOD is so much cheaper than printing and distributing discs, it looked like a no-brainer.

“Taking a customer and moving that person over from rental-physical over moving them to VOD day-and-date is like a 60 to 70 percent margin instead of a 20 to 30,” Mr. Bewkes said, according to the New York Times. “So it’s about a three-to-one trade.” (link)

Among the titles immediately available for download on iTunes: “Juno,” “Cloverfield,” “I Am Legend,” “There Will Be Blood,” “American Gangster,” “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.”

Netflix already offers VOD. And a pretty large selection of it at that...

Big time. And I'm still convinced that the whole net neutrality issue will be a significant player in this at some point.

Sony KV-30HS420. That's the TV I use in my bedroom. Once I replace my 50" Pioneer plasma with a 60", I'll move the 50" into my bedroom.

As more and more people get bigger and bigger TVs (like 50" and up), that's when Blu-ray will become more obvious.

Naw, seems more like an idiot than a bastard to me.

VoD is nothing new...and considering the majority of the market is still very much using disc-based storage media (i.e. DVDs et al) to view movies, um...nope. I'm as tech-hype as they come and unless someone's planning to snap in some OC3-like bandwidth into my place, I'm absolutely not interested in VoD.

And if I'm going to go the VoD route, I may as well embrace the piracy route.

Being a noob is what cause me to throw money down and not even paying attention to the high definition wars.

A few weeks ago, I bought the HD DVD add on for the 360 for $50. It came with the drive, remote, and King Kong. I'm really sad now after looking for stuff, and reading on, that the future of HD DVD is pretty much dead.

I'll still buy HD DVD's from ebay at least for a while....and I really don't think that Blu-Ray will really take off until they can begin selling players and movies and competitive prices in relation to regular DVD's, but it was kind of disappointing.

These are probably mentioned further up the thread but I'm feeling too lazy to search. Visit the tier threads for audio and video over at AVS if you want recommendations for demo material.

Box office flop doesn't = Bad movie.

Its just getting increasingly difficult to pry people away from their houses and 50" HD TV's and 10 bucks. They'd rather wait for the DVD. I was planning on renting Speed Racer on the weekend but all 50 or 60 copies they had were gone.

btw, guys... for those of you that the HD DVD player (or the XBox 360 add-on), Fry's has a ton of HD DVDs marked down, starting at $5.99... most decent to good titles are $9.99-$11.99... that's still cheaper than a regular DVD.

I dont really buy either one. I just netflix.

After selling off a huge chunk of my DVD collection because of space, and realizing how much I initially spent on them vs. how often they got watched and what I was given in return for selling...well, not worth it to me anymore.

It was just another thing I was spending money on and collecting. I put a stop to that.

I gotta admit.... I totally agree with you on that. when I was moving... I realized how silly it was to have all those movies... some still plastic wrapped ... there are some movies I watch over and over again... but there aren't many.

Nah there is a big indie store here, pretty famous, called Amoeba. Just took it all there and they went through them all and made their offer. Pretty fair, I walked away with am ok sum of cash so dumping over 200 DVDs...then I realized...on AVERAGE lets say I spent $10 bucks a pop...thats 2000 bucks right there on movies. And we all know we spent way more than 10 bucks a disc.

HD vs BD, wait till holographic CDs in 1-2 years... 300GB-1TB a CD.

In the mean time Download mkv (or any 1080i/p) format, and stream it your tv, save your money. (giganews.com)
